Once upon a time in Rally of Mexico

So. Once again we have Alliance Motorsport's Rally Predictions and to be frank and honest this time we have had to censor the reports of our rally spies (15 drunk unemployed Mexicans) due to incoherence and also...... shall we say questionable content. It's amusing to read about Manfred Stohl's rampage through the seeder parts of some small town in Mexico, but the details were, shall we say, just a bit TOO graphic, even for the more liberal and open journal that is the Alliance Motorsport weblog.

The most disturbing thing was mention of Gigi Galli and something about elaborate manipulation of a bum. On further research, our erstvile fact checker screamed "MY EYESS!!! THEY BURN!!!" and committed suicide to try to remove the image from his brain. No, I am not going to go further and no, I am not going to suggest you google what the hell it is..... I'm serious for a moment do NOT google if you value your sanity. But if you do, allow me to hint that you do so in the loneliness of your home, late at night where no one can hear you howl in horror at what will appear.

Unless you want to be sacked from work, where it will do it in a big hurry.

Get you sacked that is. Not do your work.

(I'm sure someone is curious, but believe me that you dont want to be. Forget I ever said it and never try looking - its the geek version of Fight Club. Except without fighting. And a manipulated bum. And not much of a club except for "I survived" members who shudder at the horror. And also, the good Lord help you if you have any idea what I'm talking about, cause I sure dont)

Anyway, while some may think elaborately manipulated bums are magnificent, I'm not one of them and thence we speak no more of that, but continue with a tamer tales of derring-do and how Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson ruined Rally of Mexico for everyone.

The problems began not long after Rally of Norway. After being promised an actual decent car for Rally Mexico, Subaru's new WRC 2007 as unveiled.... and promptly broke down, because it was designed and built by an Australian who couldn't build a rally car to save his life. As a result, Petter and Chris wont even start the event as they are on protest - but what they will do will have ramifications for the sport for a long time. Usually nightmares.

The trouble will begin when Petter, much the worse off for wear after a hard night drinking Corona, decided to have a dodgy chili taco. After the fifth visit to the hotel bathroom (which I might add peeled the paint off the walls and destroyed the toilet bowl) Chris Atkinson got the all too unfortunate idea of the "Petter Flamethrower" and decided, in conjunction with his Subaru partner, to wreck havoc on the unsuspecting drivers and spectactors.

Sebastian Loeb's insane luck didnt save him, in fact it cursed him as Chris forgot to apply the match as Petter took aim - thence a toxic mess hits the unfortunate Frenchman's windshield and dissolves the car. Loeb DNF's and has to seek professional help in dealign with the terror of seeing his car melt under the blast of ......

....

God help you if I need to describe that any further

Marcus Gronholm refuses to drive past second service as there is a bad smell coming from his car. It is later found to be somthing Chris left behind and lit.

Mikko Hirvonen escapes the carnage relatively unscathed apart from a bout of vomiting caused by the fumes coming off Loeb's car and wins his third WRC event.

Henning Solberg remarkably is left alone. And comes second. I have no idea why that would be.

Third.... Dani Sordo in a borrowed Metro. His car wasn't hit by a Subaru sneak flamethrower attack, but in fact was stolen and sold for scrap by the local children.

Fourth.... Gareth McHale, mainly because I'm seriously running out of FIA seeds to complete this list, what with all the smelly garbage flying about.

Jari-Matti Latvala still has the WRC's coolest sounding name and as a result, many spectators die to keep his car in fact when they shield it from a partiularly bad twin blast from the Subaru boys and he comes fifth.

Sixth, mainly because I've lost all command of rationality is Matthew Wilson, who not only finishes a rally but doesnt use the Max's Golden Dunny (aka SupeRally) restart rule for the first time ever.

Seventh is Speedy Gonzalez

Eigth is awarded to anyone brave enough to actually read this crap to the end. And thence first person to do so will be granted one WRC point and the worship of two cats.

And there you have it. More proof I should get a life.

Find us on the web below!

Annnnd looks like I actually got one prediction right. The Subaru WRC2007 is just as crap as the 2006, if Petter's exit is any indication. I dont really se much of an improvement that cant be put down to actual decent tyres either.

Petter's car lost oil pressure on the transport to SS6.

Atko 2nd fastest and fastest on last 2 stages (both the super special). Looks like he finishes the day in 2nd, 18.8 seconds behind Loeb and 3.8 seconds infront of Hirvonen. Gooooo Atko

Day 1 highlights on Fox sports 1 at 9.30 tonight.

Which results were you looking at Marcus?

Petter was leading when the car sprung an oil leak and had to stop.
Chris is coming second.

How on earth can you say there is no improvement?
Where they running 1st and 3rd last year?

Andrew

Petter finished second last year, Chris was seventh after doing some damage.

There doesn't seem to be any improvement that cant be put down to tyres. They were on Pirellis last year and they were crap. A pickup in a few secs per stage is easily done on better rubber. And then you have what appears to be a mechanically related exit, which happened all too often last year......

Being the Subaru owning fanboy I am (I bought an 06 for my road car) I would love to see better results - and I would like Atkinson to finish on the podium. But I hold little hope with the evidence of the last 15 months of cars falling apart and drivers forced to try too hard to make up for chassis and tyre deficiencies.

It's early days for the WRC2007 of course and there's more development work they need to do of course. However, the other teams will also be developing as well. Seems like situation normal to me and as the Subaru fanboy, that's hard to take.

Citroen's Sebastien Loeb leads the Rally Mexico following all the 'proper' stages on Friday, having inherited the lead after Petter Solberg was forced out prior to the start of El Cubilete 2.

Seb managed to keep in touch with Solberg following the opening loop this morning and although the Frenchman was unable to match the Norwegian, he was second quickest to him in SS1 and SS3 and was third fastest in SS2. As a result he returned to the mid-day service area at Leon just 7.7 seconds adrift and still more than in contention.

In the afternoon, Loeb turned the screw and slashed the margin to 4.9 seconds after the repeat run through the 23.06 kilometre Alfaro test. He then cut the gap further in SS5, leaving Petter with just a 2.1 second cushion before the Subaru gave up the ghost.

Seb will now take a 30-odd second lead into the second day on Saturday and while there are still a lot of kilometres to go - including the two 2.21 km super specials, which will officially end the first day - he is already looking strong and should be able to pace himself through leg 2.

Petter meanwhile having lost the lead, will have to console himself with the fact he set three fastest stage times this morning and was extremely competitive with the new car, which appeared fast, if fragile. Granted he benefited from a better road position, but still it was a good start for the new Impreza WRC2007, something that was also illustrated by the form of Petter's team-mate, Chris Atkinson.

With Solberg out, Atkinson took over the mantle and he is locked in a fierce battle with BP Ford's Mikko Hirvonen, with just 0.4 seconds between them, although granted both are some way behind Loeb.

Mikko lost out this morning as he was running second on the road and therefore had to ‘sweep' away the lose gravel. He came back in the repeat runs though and was third and second quickest in SS5 and SS6, Ortega 2 and El Cubilete, to haul himself up the leaderboard from sixth to third post-SS6.

Marcus Gronholm however didn't manage to bounce back and slipped behind OMV Kronos' Manfred Stohl on SS5. Although he regained sixth spot in the next test that was only due to Petter's demise. The Finn will now start the second leg some 40-seconds off the lead and with something of a mountain to climb, if he is to win.

Daniel Sordo and Stohl meanwhile are fourth and fifth. Sordo has enjoyed a strong day and is clearly glad to have left the winter events behind him. The Spaniard posted top four times in every single test, bar one, when he was 7th in SS5. Stohl has also gone well and won the Ortega 2 test.

Further-down the leaderboard, Stobart's Jari-Matti Latvala and Matthew Wilson round out the top eight, both having had a pretty solid day. Latvala has been ‘Mr Consistent' and was eighth fastest in 5 of the 6 proper tests and ended the leg easily ahead of his team-mate, 2.5 minutes in front.

Wilson for his part is comfortably in eighth, the final drivers' points' paying position, over a minute up on fellow Ford runner, Gareth MacHale.

Three-time British Rally champion, Mark Higgins completes the top ten, in his Group N Mitsubishi Evo - and in addition to heading the Group N class, he also leads the Production WRC category, 5.1 seconds up on Mirco Baldacci, who heads the chasing pack, followed by Toshi Arai and Fumio Nutahara.

Of the rest, Henning Solberg ended the day 16th having lost over 3 minutes on the first test following a roll. He is 15 seconds or so off Munchi's Ford driver, Juan Pablo Raies.

Raies' team-mate, Luis-Perez Companc was the only other ‘works' retirement, in addition to Petter. Companc went out on Alfaro 1, SS1, when he suffered suspension damage less than 2-4 kilometres into the 23.06 kilometre stage. It is thought that he will re-start on day 2 under the SupeRally.

More to follow on Sunday...

Leg 2 Unofficial News

Sébastien Loeb (Citroen) won four stages to extend his first day lead to a
fraction over a minute. A rejuvenated Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen
charged up the Rally Mexico leaderboard to end the second leg in second
place tonight in their Ford Focus RS World Rally Car. Behind Grönholm, Dani
Sordo (Citroen) was able to capitalise on Hirvonen's spin to climb to third.
Second this morning was Chris Atkinson (Subaru) but the Australian could not
match the pace of his rivals after fluctuating turbo boost pressure and he
slipped to fifth, 9.7sec behind Hirvonen. His cause was not helped when he
damaged the front of his car after being forced off the road by a
non-competing car this afternoon. Manfred Stohl (Citroen) rounded off the
top six despite differential troubles this afternoon.

The second day was cloudy in the morning, but remained dry and sunny. The
temperature ranged from 13 degrees Celsius in the morning to a high of 28
degrees Celsius.

The final leg is the shortest of the rally with just 62.06km of competition.
After leaving León at 07.45, drivers face three stages to the north and east
before a third and final visit to the super special stage, at which
competitors will make a double pass of the test. They return to León for
the finish ceremony at 13.00.

A rejuvenated Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen charged up the Rally
Mexico leaderboard to end the second leg in second place tonight in their
Ford Focus RS World Rally Car. The Finns emerged on top of an enthralling
four-car battle in the dusty mountain roads of central Mexico on this fourth
round of the FIA World Rally Championship. The BP-Ford World Rally Team
pair will start tomorrow's third and final leg with a 34.5sec advantage over
their closest rivals. Team-mates Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen are
fourth in another Focus RS, just 2.8sec behind Dani Sordo on the final step
of the podium. They had a grip on third until a costly high-speed spin
midway through the afternoon sent them back into the fight for the position.

Marcus Grönholm/Timo Rautiainen: "Today was much better," said Grönholm. "I
lost time yesterday with a small problem but everything was back to normal
today. My aim was to catch those ahead of me and take second and that's
what I achieved. "I made a few changes to the car between stages 10 and 11
and it feels perfect now. It's a bit late but now I'm happy with the way it
feels and I was able to push hard for the first time in this rally on that
last stage this morning. My pre-rally test wasn't perfect so I started with
a similar set-up to the one we used in Sweden and Norway and that wasn't
right for here. Now it feels right. I'm a minute behind Loeb so to catch
him isn't possible unless he has problems but I want second," he said.

Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen: Hirvonen started in third and climbed to
second before Grönholm moved ahead. However, the 26-year-old Finn opened a
18sec lead over Sordo before spinning on the second stage of the afternoon
loop and dropping to fourth. He regained third on the next test but was
edged out by Sordo on the final two super special stages. "I lost about
25sec when I spun," he said. "About 3km after the start I went into a
fourth gear right-left combination bend too fast and just slid wide and
spun. I punctured both rear tyres but the mousse system worked perfectly to
keep the tyres inflated. I was a little bit lucky that I only spun because
it could have been more serious. To fight for second place I had to take
risks otherwise my only option was to lift off the accelerator and settle
for third which I wasn't going to do. "Second is now out of reach which I'm
disappointed about but I'm still in the battle for a podium place. There
will be a big fight for third tomorrow and I'm ready for that. I don't want
to let Dani take third from me," added Hirvonen.

2. Citroen Total http://citroen.rallye-info.com/teams.asp?sid=1

With just four stages to come tomorrow, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena
continue to lead the 2007 Rally Mexico with their Citroën C4 WRC, while Dani
Sordo and Marc Martí have profited from today's action to join their
team-mates on the overnight podium in the second C4 WRC.

Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena: "Today's stages are more technically
challenging," commented Sébastien at breakfast before heading off for the
morning's loop. "It should be easier to pull out a gap." Backing up his
words with action, the three-time World Champion profited from the 30.20km
of the day's opening test (Ibarrilla, SS9) to post his third best time since
the start. He then took his score to four fastest times on SS10 before
controlling from in front on Derramadero (SS11), the last stage of the
group. "Everything went well this morning," he reported back at service. "I
enjoy these stages where the numerous slippery portions mean your driving
has got to be spot on. I was able to push hard, but I wasn't at maximum
attack all the time because we already have a reasonable lead over our main
rivals. And even though the characteristics of the stages were quite
different, my C4 WRC continued to handle very well."

Dani Sordo/Marc Marti: Dani also had a good morning, although his run wasn't
entirely trouble-free. "I don't think I drove too badly on SS10 and 11 and I
was able to see how much I have come on since last year, especially over the
most slippery portions. Unfortunately, I dropped a little time on SS9 when I
was unsighted by the dust thrown up by the cars running ahead of us on the
road. The stage was very narrow and it would have been easy to make a
mistake, so I preferred to lift, even if that meant dropping from 4th to 5th
place. But there's still everything to play for..." The Spaniard couldn't
have known how right he was.

3. Subaru http://subaru.rallye-info.com/teams.asp?sid=5

The Subaru World Rally Team's quest for points continued on the second day
of Rally Mexico, with Chris Atkinson/Glenn Macneall ending the leg in fifth
position. Although it was a tough day, Chris felt he learned a lot more
about the characteristics of the Impreza WRC2007, which is still being
developed by the team throughout its first-ever World Rally Championship
event. With four special stages left to run, Chris is on target to achieve
the team's pre-event target of a top-five finish.

Petter Solberg/Phil Mills: Retired

Chris Atkinson/Glen MacNeall: We're still in the fight, that's the main
thing. We had a bit of a technical problem on the first stage after service
this afternoon. It cost us a bit of time on the subsequent stages as well
and we haven't been able to push as hard as we wanted to. Somehow we're
still only a few seconds behind the guys in front, so if it's working well
tomorrow, then we've still got a chance of a podium finish. We'll just have
to wait and see how it feels on the first corner. For sure, we'll do all we
can to get the best possible finish tomorrow."

4. OMV Kronos Citroen http://citroen.rallye-info.com/teams.asp?sid=1

It was a restrained start for the OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team in the
morning of leg two. The reason was a less than optimal choice of tyres which
prevented a better place for now. The OMV duo Manfred Stohl/Ilka Minor is
nevertheless confident to move up in the afternoon. In any case, they are
not far behind a place on the podium.

Manfred Stohl/Ilka Minor: Stohl: Almost anything is still possible at the
"Corona Rally Mexico", the fourth run to the FIA World Rally Championship.
The OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team is only 46,8 seconds away from a
podium place. Reason enough for Manfred Stohl to be quite confident for the
remainder of the rally. "Grönholm has proven that three near perfect special
stages are good for moving up three places. The time differences are, apart
from Loeb, still very small. I didn't have a bad feeling during the morning
and several split-times were very good. But I am somewhat irritated by the
fact that we are as fast as Grönholm during five kilometres of a special
stage and then four seconds slower during the next five kilometres. If we
find the cause for this we'll be with the best again in the afternoon ",
explains the OMV driver.

5. Stobart M-Sport Ford http://ford.rallye-info.com/teams.asp?sid=2

Both Henning Solberg/Cato Menkerud and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila now
sit in Manufacturer point scoring positions for the Stobart VK M-Sport Ford
team after day two of Corona Rally Mexico. Team-mates Matthew Wilson/Michael
Orr are on course for their first championship point of the year in eighth,
with Latvala and Solberg in seventh and ninth respectably.

Henning Solberg/Cato Menkerud: "On the first stage this morning everything
was ok but there was a bit of dust at the end of the stage which made it
difficult to see braking points. The afternoon stages were feeling much
better, we had a bit of gravel in the front of the car on stage 14 but no
problems. The car is running well and I am very happy with my times today; I
was working hard, it is not easy to be second on the road here I can tell
you that. It is actually still difficult on the second time over the stages
because some of the lower cars actually throw gravel back onto the road
which does not make it easy. I'm happy we are in ninth and we'll try our
best tomorrow and see what happens."

Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila: "It was a pressure-free day today because
we didn't really have anything to gain but everything to lose. There was no
point to push today and throw it all away, and without the pressure I seemed
to be able to find my confidence in the car and myself. I really enjoyed the
afternoon and the times were quite good so I am very happy, much better than
yesterday. The car has been performing really well today and we kept the
ride height up so not to damage it. We will do the same tomorrow and see
what happens, it is nice to be in the points again this rally."

Matthew Wilson/Michael Orr: "It was ok today, just a lot of little problems
that slowed us down a bit which weren't so good for the confidence levels. I
was feeling quite good this morning but on stage 10 we lost about 30 seconds
after a few things went wrong. We stalled on the first hairpin and then
over-shot a junction towards the end of the stage which didn't help our
time. I also drove through a steel gate which was closed over the road,
luckily for us it did not damage the car but we still lost time slowing down
for it. On the plus side however, we are looking fine for some points and I
haven't made any mistakes at all during this event."

6. Munchis Ford http://ford.rallye-info.com/teams.asp?sid=2

Luis Perez Compan lies 20th, over 40minutes off the leading pace while Juan
Pablo Raies is 13th 19minutes from the leades and 20seconds adrift or Austin
MacHales Focus WRC. Drivers suffered brakes problems on Leg 1 and were
driving without brake hiderence in Leg 2.

Luis Perez Companc/Joes-Maria Volta: "On the first stage today I had a spin
and, although the stages were all less dusty than yesterday, the gaps
between my times was still close." SS13 Quote: The stage was okay. There
were some stones on the corners, but I am working better and taking cleaner
lines."

Juan Pablo Raies/Jorge Perez Companc: "My brakes are working better now. It
was good fun!"

Exactly, especially when there were so few WRC cars in the event. I would've thought the target for a factory team was to win.
