Bollocks. There is only one person deciding how fast to drive a given corner or crest, based on how they read what the road does.

Drive to what you can see, and drive at the speed you are willing to crash at.

I like that statement! Unless the roadbook sends you into a quicksand pit I cannot see how people can blame it for a crash. The pace is still decided by the driver.

oh, i dunno about that. I was doing a roadbook rally once, and the call said Straight On uphill. so I went straight on uphill. turned out the hill was actually an embankment and we rolled. I've always claimed it as a navigational error, but now that you've pointed it out to me, may well have been a roadbook error.

Legend: Going "straight on" on a straight on call. I always have to consciously think about that call. One of my first lessons in rally was "Now straight on is not always straight on". EVOSFK: "what the **** are you talking about?". You were lucky it was not a quicksand pit hey.
Roadbook errors are frustrating. I think thats where the DaveTress comment of "Drive at the speed you are willing to crash at" comes in well too.
Where I do get really peaved is cry babys who crash then blame the road book for not telling them what was on the other side of a blind piece of road-usually some sort of crest or brow. I have read posts on this forum particularly in regard to rallies run this year where people were doing exactly this. I hereby punish them to 6months hard labour on the repairing their broken rally car!

I always preferred road book rallies, less jibber jabber from the nav for me to have to pretend to listen to.

Dvr - Tub Blanch to Nav - Bruce Ryan one night deep into Buladelah forests: "Don't worry about all that Bruno, JUST POINT".
