The VCRS series here in Victoria, up until a couple of years ago (say 2005 or 2006), relatively often would have over subscribed fields (and thus sometimes half a dozen crews on the "reserve" list hoping for someone to drop out so they might get a start).

These days full fields such as the Tunbridge has for this weekend aren't as commonplace, however good events with good directing teams in popular forests will always get a few extras out who might not be contesting the series.. but simply like a particular forest!

Wombat (where this event is) is definitely one of those areas..Plus the combined Directing team of John "JR" Roberts and Trevor Woods (with BMSC forum member Sandii's mum, Lynn Cuttle as Secretary) is about as good an organising team as you could assemble!

Also, in the entries for the "Tunbridge" are a number of Ballarat based crews (Ballarat is not that far from Spargo Creek, Trentham etc where this event is being run) who I am sure are having a run both because they like the area plus they are supporting their own club (BLCC) who are the notional organising club (Albeit that the Clerk of Course, Road Director and Event Secretary are all from other non-Ballarat based car clubs).

To be honest though, we are very lucky down here in Victoria that it a bit of an embarrassment of riches in some senses... with still relatively healthy fields in all VCRS (Clubman) events (usually at least 50 or so starters), and VRC events (usually at least 45 or so starters). When you add to those series all the other gravel events such as the regular HRA events (and the HRA has an incredibly loyal cohort of regular competitors), plus a bunch of other annual "non-series" events.. such as the NCCA's "Challange of Clubs" weekend... there isn't a whole lot to complain about.

Sure, people still do.. and often there are cries that "the end of the world is nigh" and similar complaints... but in reality from an event organisational perspective here in Victoria..., just a little thought, organisation and planning should deliver a field that will more than meet the usual break even costs for club, multi-club, or State level events.

On a personal note though.. starting at car 55 (and thus not even getting away from the start until nearly 8.30PM) is a bit of a crappy thing... as that means we won't be finishing until probably at least 1.00AM.. and I will really be gasping for a cleansing ale by then!

Still with Dave Trees in the car behind Karina and I on the road, there is sure to be some good conversations in between stages PLUS.. Karina is so bloody funny to chat and joke with.. that I reckon we are going to have an absolute blast!

Cheers

David

You had better watch your mirrors in the first stage

Looks like it will be book in by 1700 then go have a snooze for 3 hours .... or spend the time preparing my pacenotes ... oops, I mean maps

This is pretty impressive especially given that late start for some crews. It suggests event quality will still draw people.

The one that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is Rob Parry back at No 54. Sure, he is still an E... but on past form (prior to his mini sabbatical for a year or so to build his new house) he is one damn quick and good steerer. Plus he has now got his new Fuel injected, 2.4 litre grunter (with various contributions to that by Les Collins and Shuggy et al) all happening..plus replaced the Zed box with an Option 1.. and god knows what other amazing developments he and Bob have been working on ... so it should be a real rocketship now!

If you get the chance before the event Dave, go check Rob's 1600 out... it really is a work of art in terms of the attention to detail with absolutely everything that is done! Its the closest I have seen to Glenn Bakkers "IFK-250" .. and as I understand it, might actually exceed Glenn's in terms of grunt and useable power!

Cheers

David

I think Glen Cugley is another one to watch that Magna has been setting the pace at more than one of his club events recently and he did very well at the Alpine last year which I think was his last outing (but not in the Magna). Didn't realise the steering on those old TN Magna's is only about 2.7 lock to lock standard.

mmmaybe (and he is another Wombat Forest specialist)......except that Glen is doing the novice (timed to the minute) event, so its going to be not so straightforward to make a comparison between his (and the other half dozen or so crews in the Wally Wombat thing) results and the VCRS crews

The one that stuck out for me was Grant Heywood at 27. He really is driving well, and was setting times comfortably in the top 10 at the Alpine.

Won't be a problem .... with A-B timing you only have to pass people once !

(and we don't get all sooky over seeding & start order down here anyway .... )

Hey ya bstrat,

yeah, the start, service break, and finish is all at Korweinguboora Reserve... which I think is just about a 2 minute stroll from Spargo Creek...

On Saturday night first car starts at 18:30hrs... is due back at Service at around 20:50hrs.. and then is due to finish at 22:53hrs (ish!!!).

Alternately, from 15:00hrs is check in (again at the unpronouncable place).. and then you'll have the opportunity to learn all sorts of new swear words as I get my colouring pencils and tracing paper out and play "lets plot the map"... and "WTF JR??...and "WOT??? I don't remember that road ever being there in the past?" and all sorts of other games that should only be practiced between consenting adults!

...SCHEISSE!!! How many sleeps to the Aka?... I want to go pace noting (on gravel) again.. and someone took my RoM away this year and I want it back!......

Anyway, if the above hijinks at Korwewhathisname Reserve doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then I am sure you'll be able to get some sort of spectator instructions there at the HQ (start, service, finish etc).. and then go find a nice little comfy spot they suggest, and well....... the rest I don't know.. as I kind of haven't done the spectating thing for a few years now..???

Cheers

Dave
