2003 Alpine Rally
Pre-registration for entries in the Historic Rally Association's "ALPINE RALLY" on 29th November are now open.
Pre-registration costs $50 - which is deducted from the entry fee - and will help to secure you a start in the event which will no doubt be over subscribed.
Registration forms are available from Jodi Mann (Event Secretary), 6 Bradley Place, Boronia Vic 3155.
NOTE - Priority of entries goes to members of the HRA. If you are serious about doing the Alpine, I suggest you join up. Contact Geoff Floyd (Membership Sec) on geoff.liz@bigpond.com for details.
This is an event not to be missed. Just do it !!

What are the vehicle eligibility requirements for entering the Alpine? I was under the impression that your vehicle had to be special and wonderful (you know, in that historic kind of way), as opposed to any and every dodgy old PRC refugee?
And joining the HRA can't cost that much... I mean, half the association must be on a fixed income by now, right?

Fro,
My understanding is any dodgey PRC car can enter.
A friend of mine is pushing me to enter the 210, it's the week after Natcap, so we'll see if the guy who's driving it wants to enter, I think I'm working

Alpine Eligibility
Not 100% finalised, but God (Stuart Lister - Clerk of Course) says it will be similar to the 2001 event, which was basically :
- PRC
- 2WD only
- no forced induction
- possibly pre 1980 ?
I'll check at HRA meeting Wednesday night. There is certainly NO requirement for them to meet the various CAMS &/or FIA Historic specs.

Actually, our youngest member is less than 1 year old ... the oldest in his 70's.
Annual membership is $50 from memory....

You had better hurry !!
As of the HRA meeting last night, the organisers already have OVER 40 pre-registrations paid up ....... for an absolute maximum of 90 starting positions.
It hasn't even been "released" to the general rallying public yet (I think the registration form will go onto www.vicrally.com.au today )
So if you are planning to have a run ... or even thinking about it ..... you had better register QUICKLY. The pre-registration fee is refundable if you end up changing your mind between now & November. And remember that HRA members get preference ....
Update from the C of C last night on event format :
- based out of Bairnsdale
- approx 120 km of daylight stages Saturday arvo
- meal / rest break till about 9 pm (at Bruthen)
- night division will be 4 stages ..... 3 of about 40-odd km, then a service break, then the last stage is 145 km or thereabouts !!
- finish about 5 am, then rest break till lunchtime BBQ Sunday then drive home ....
Event will be fully route-charted. Daylight dvision running under "special stage" conditions (ie. penalty = elapsed time), night division under target timing (to the second).
I'm counting the days ......

Hagar
Now you've done it - you've ruined my retirement plans.
I had a long talk to myself in Nairobi, lubricated generously by an excellent South African sauvignon blanc (yes, kiddies - foreign medicine!) and convinced myself that I was now old enough to retire.
Planned to sell the Celica; even told my wife.
Figured I'd done all the rallying that was worth doing, back when it was worth doing it. Even the first (??) historic Alpine. It's all getting too hard to organise, too hard to fund, too hard to find a service crew, too hard to work up the enthusiasm .................. You know! Too Grumpy! Too Olde! Otherwise Bob!
And now you're offering a handful of 40km sections and almost 150 km - AT NIGHT!!!
CANCEL THE RETIREMENT!
Where are the 1972 Southern Cross Rally plans for fitting a long-range fuel tank? I'm sure they were lying around here ...........................
Can I just enter for the night stages? Please?
I've gotta drive down to the post office now, with my pre-registration. Before youse mexicans clog up the entry list without some class from the North. But I'm gunna talk to God, I really am. The 2004/5 Alpine just can't be allowed to continue like this. He's gotta stop doin' it.
Grumpy (?) Olde (yep!) Bob

Grumpy Olde Bob,
Will you tolerate whippersnappers as service crew?

Jodi Mann (God's Little Helper) said she was putting the registration form online today or tomorrow.
The entry fee last time (2001) was $350 if I recall ..... so I would guess $400 - $450 ish ? Not announced yet.
G.O.B. ........ "Ari" hasn't decided yet if he will do the Alpine or not ..... there is a possiblity I may end up in the left hand seat of the ex - Bond 1970 HDT Monaro with Ken Cusack .... ....but I am open to offers !!
One way or the other I WILL be doing this event !!
Dave

Absolutely! I'll publish a list of competencies in due course. The only one that readily comes to mind at the moment is
"must be proficient with corkscrew"
There will probably be another along the lines of "must be kind to older, slower drivers" Or was that for the co-driver's competencies list? Ahh, I forget ..................

That I can do. I can even open medicine bottles without a corkscrew... Survivor style.

I promise not to deride your age or speed, if you promise not to deride my Datsun.

But Fro, you're in a much weaker negotiating position than he is!
Oh, except for the bit where you're offering to help him...
