NSW Championship wrap 2008
We were one of the few teams to run the whole NSW championship this year, except for officialling at Natcap. And we finished every event (by sheer luck at the Bay, thanks to Ari ) – hence our success in the 2WD Championship as others didn’t start or didn’t finish some rounds. And if Jeff David had finished the Bay he'd have blitzed the 2WD championship .
Anyway I’d just like to comment on the quality of the State events which was very high indeed and a credit to the six organising clubs NSSCC, HVSCC, NDDC, SKDAC, BMSC and CHDSCC
My only criticisms really would be the rough roads used for Lithgow and the shortness of both Myall Stages and Coffs Coast. I didn’t run Natcap so can’t really comment except that Greenhills where we did a control looked to be very slippery but that’s not a criticism.
In short if you want to run a quality event then look at what the State series has to offer . The most disappointing aspect this year was the lack of entries. For such great events that is a real shame. I believe we need to talk up the State series at every opportunity on these forums and to our rally mates because it’s just too good to go unsupported like it was in 2008.
And we also need to dispense with the mentality that a combined ARC/State rally just doesn’t work. Forget about GLR in 07 . We had a ball at Coffs because of the awesome roads and slick organisation, and I have to say that CoC Tony Creer bent over backwards to accommodate us. My only gripe as I said was that we only got 111km competitive. If the State event included one more pass of Sherwood and Bucca on the Sunday morning that would have taken it to 150km which would have been perfect – and we still could have driven home on the Sunday.
We’re looking at doing most of the State rounds in 2009. We were intending to official at Lithgow but as it’s planned for the middle weekend of the school hols we’ll be away. Oh and the AMSAG event at Eden – that looks like just too much of a challenge to pass up. And we’ll run Mini Dulla as a shakedown, I reckon SKDAC will get a healthy field since Narooma Booma’s not running in 09.
So when you’re planning your 2009 rally year take a close look at the NSW series. And Bega’s back – what more can I say – YEAH!!! If you’ve never run Bega DO IT, you won’t be disappointed, it’s the BEST!!!
cheers
Sparko

firstly, let me say congratulations for an excellent result in the state championship. Don't be so apologetic. you won what you won, and you deserve it. Its not your fault if someone else crashes or breaks his car. remember its a competition, not a race.

No, I won't dispense with that, until they dispense with the "super" series format. ARC 'Super' Series/state simply doesn't work. If it did, then more than 12 cars would have turned up. Be it clear though that I firmly believe that the ARC should just be a series where the cars turn up to the best state round in each state. But the Cookie cutter approach they have ATM is ruining our sport.

no we should never forget about it. the only reason we had to endure it is because people forgot about the last time it happened.

That's because Tony is a top bloke, and the organisation, was - as you say - slick. (from our perspective as humble road closures anyway). It's true that good organisation can make the best of a bad situation. doesn't change the fact its a bad situation.

There is no fact that it's a bad situation - it's simply a matter of opinion. My opinion is that it's not a bad situation because as you confirmed there were good people in control of the event. This made it a great event not just for ARC competitors but also for the State competitors who bothered to give it a go.
It's time to stop talking down our sport and to look for the positives. Perhaps we will get more people wanting to compete then.

Well done John, well deserved result.
Some interesting points about more involvement in the sport, look forward to hearing them first hand at the next club meeting, the first line of involvement in club motorsport.

John,
Why do we need to look for the positives, surely they should be jumping out at us.Or at the very least being pointed out to us by the true and great administrators of our sport who take note of the issues and strive and strain until they rectify the problems.
I'm sorry I don't prescribe to the "if you don't talk about it it will go away" syndrome.
I'm more of the find the problem ,find a reasonable solution, fix it, move on to the next one subscriber

Why do we need to look for the positives??? Because often they are there in front of our noses (eg the Coffs Rally) but we are so busy bagging out the negatives that we miss the obvious. We all know that there's little use at the moment in sitting back and waiting for them to be identified to us by the sport's administrators. I was prepared to give Coffs a go because, despite the GLR, I got good vibes from Coffs in 07 and thought the event had the goods - I'm glad I did, it was a cracker.
Glad you ascribe to the "find the problem and fix it mentality" - there's a lot of that to be done. I'm of the "look for the good points and promote/encourage them" mentality. We need both.
I hope you haven't misinterpreted my attitude to be "if you don't talk about it it will go away syndrome" because nothing could be further from the truth.

You must spread some reputation around before giving it to Sparko again.
