Castrol Rally Help...

Anybody who went to the Castrol Rally in the late '70's and '80's can you please email me !!

Only reply if you have an ACCURATE memory of the event particularly the tarmac stages that were held in Macarthur.

This is for an ACT Heritage Festival promotion.

Thanks,
Matt

young whippersnappers!

Nope! Can't remember the Castrols. I was into my first retirement (from rallying) by then. But if you want to get into REAL heritage, talk to some of us about competing in the "Don Capasco". In XU-1s. Learning the meaning of fear ............

Where's my medication?

Ah! The medication worked! Something came back! Intersection of Bugden and Appel .................... Escort RS sponsored by some NZ mower company ............... driven by young, up-and-coming Finn (now ageing Member of the European Parliament!)

[Answer: Vatanen, who taught pine trees the meaning of fear LONG before MacRae (junior) came along]

The real question now is: How did you recognise it as Morris' ?

I dare say that Matt's or Bede's/Tweety's dads would remember something... Good luck asking.

Tried Waterhouse?

I'll ask Yoda tonight, and Rod K tomorrow morning.

And my knowlegde of ACT rallying's official old bastards is exhausted.

Corvette was Russell Stenhouse, who went on to be a quite respected circuit racer. The following year he ran his HT monaro as 0 on the same stages of the first ACT round, end Feb '81, with less success- broke the wheels and suspension on a gutter not far from Lucy Gullet Circuit.

I couldn't get to the bitumen but certainly got to the forests (a BLOODY long way on a pushbike, but not as far as Longleat from Bath, another story!). Got to Condor Creek on Sat night though, was more than happy to get wet!! That was the year channel 9's Dazza drove a stock Charade.

My first rallying memory goes back to the first ('74) Don Capasco, spectating in stromlo. I told myself I would own an A110 when I grew up (closest I got was an R8!!), Brock and I think Lang drove HQ V8's quite successfully, a datto hit a gate post where we were and Bondy rolled a little before.

Morris was driving the Capri at that stage so it might well have been his 'nose'!!

Stop the waffle!! Maybe the best bet would be the organisers of the event?

Hi Legacy

Dad competed in the 1980 Castrol navigating for David House. He remembers some of the bitumen stages (particularly the Appel corner, where Bondy stuck it up on two wheels). He has a number of newspaper articles of the event. These mention 5 bitumen stages which were repeated in the same order. The stages went through Macarthur, Fadden, Gowrie and Chisholm.

He also has the Australian Motor Racing Year book, number 10, from 1980, which has details of the event.

If you want to look at any of these email me. Dad is currently away, but he gets back in a week, so if you want to talk to him I can tell you how to get in touch with him after he gets back.

As Spac mentioned, Bede/Tweety's Dad would be a good person to talk to, but Dad thinks Matt's Dad was overseas at the time, and therefore probably wouldn't be of much use to you.

Trevor

Correctimondo...

Hi Trevor, good to see you on here!

You (and your dad) are right - Dad was on a 6 month posting at the time. I had to con Mum into taking me spectating! Some mums take their kids to footy training; some take them to soccer practice; mine took me into the middle of a forest for 6 hours at a time so that I could get showered in dirt...
