New minimum age changes not to apply in NSW

A proposal from the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) for NSW to adopt the new minimum licensing age requirement for circuit racing has been opposed by the NSW Motor Vehicle Sports Licensing Advisory Committee (MVSLAC).
It was announced earlier this month that CAMS has approved a change to the minimum licensing age for circuit racing in Australia from 16 to 14 years.
As a result of the MVSLAC’s refusal, no persons under the age of 16 may compete in circuit racing events in NSW; however NSW licence holders under 16 may compete in other states in line with CAMS’ new policy.
The MVSLAC and the NSW Police agreed that the proposal made a sound business case, however were not in a position to support the proposal without further information. The MVSLAC has requested that CAMS provides further documentation - outlining the conduct of medical and road-safety research that supports the minimum age change - before the proposal is reconsidered.
CAMS CEO Graham Fountain said, “This is a disappointing outcome which will adversely affect both the national application of this policy and the potential for young drivers.
“We will continue to pursue this objective in the interest of fostering our young talent across Australia.”
CAMS will resubmit its proposal to the MVSLAC in the near future.
