Watch old Uncle Doug Muxlow, there is the greatest example of lack of wheel spin you will ever see, rarely loses because of it.
The HRA have been able to gain permission to use parts of shire roads for the event and part of the conditions was that there was to be no ruts left from the start line, seems a very small price to pay for entry.
Practice boys, practice, the start may be where you losing those valuable seconds.

If we can extend the 'no wheel spin zone' to the entire competitive distance the Corona may be competitive

Second stage start officials at this years Bonnie Doon Rally put this in force, worked ok down hill with some clutch slip. Im sure there would be a few cars out there that would struggle with the clutch slip issue tho.
Launch control anyone?

Probably too complex to set up but perhaps a flying start set up a couple of hundred metres down the road from the start control but how do you predict the actual start time on the time cards and stuff like that.
Then again a lot of cars I've seen do a better job digging two trenches than actually accelarating off the line at times.

Why not just start the stage 50m further in?
(Yes, yes, I do actually understand).

Relax... it's no big deal :)
We have had a few events here in Victoria over recent years (mostly in the North-East) where the no wheel-spin rule has been applied off start lines, and despite some fears of "life as we know it" ending as a result, it has all gone really rather smoothly (with very few problems... and IIRC only one or two people who were called to account for infringing the "no wheel-spin" requirement off the line)).
The way I have seen it mostly enforced hasn't been an automatic infraction for any breaking of traction (as that WOULD be ridiculous), but rather a sensible approach whereby avoiding the big dropping of the clutch and rooster tail starts is what is the aim of the game.
It takes reasoned instruction and advice to start control officials (i.e. usually the Stage Commander) from the Event Command team and a similarly sensible approach from competitors to understand that the forest and shire road access we have is a privilege and not a right..and therefore, taking a slightly gentler start for the first 50 metres is a very small price to pay for the overall benefit of forest/road/stage access.
Yeah sure.. would many of us prefer it if we could simply "go wild" and do whatever we want? Probably the answer is "yes". However, such restraints as what is being required for start controls at the 2009 Alpine can and do work and also have the added benefit of serving as a useful reminder that our access to areas where we compete is as "guests" and therefore just like as guests when we are invited to friends homes sometimes out of respect we need to remove our boots at the door!
Cheers
David

Yes.
Although, I am wondering how easy it will be to get off the line without wheelspin....
