Lindsay,
We used one of these in our car for the Southern Mountains Rally last year.
The quality is pretty good for a camera of this type, sure it's not HD quality stuff, but still just as good as a cheap handy cam.
The only issue we found was the mic is REALLY sensitive, so any wind noise will over ride anything else (as well as maybe some vibration from the cage).
We mounted our's on the cross brace of the roll cage, manufactured a mount which was pretty easy. The only tricky part was turning it on and off.
The unit makes a beep when it turns on and off, and when you start and stop recording. With the car running, or your helmet on it can be a bit hard to hear if it was one beep (stop recording and turning on) or two beeps (start recording).
With relation to the 30 auto shut off, this is only for when it is sitting in standby mode, if it is recording, it will keep going until either the batteries run out or the memory card fills up.
In regards to the memory and battery life, we had a 2GB memory card and good quality energiser batteries. The batteries lasted longer then the memory. We managed to get all of the first, second and third stage (45km stage) plus the transport between stage 2 & 3 (becuase i couldn't hear the beep to turn it off) and also the transport from the end of stage 3 to service.
All up, if you make sure it's turned off and on at the right moment you should easily be able to get a full event (say Bathurst or Oberon) and if you wanted to get something with more distance i.e. SMR you might need a 2nd memory card and some spare batteries wouldnt go astray either.
Oh and BTW, ours was the ATC2K model, obviously a higher quality model might offer different preformance and quality of vision
Cheers,
Mick Bannon
