TSR777 has some part of a clue
Angry Warning to race car sellers

Want to let eveyone know there is currently a scam involving people selling race/rally cars. The "buyer" will contact you by email only and ask to pay you through Pay Pal. You will then be sent an email from Pay Pal stating that the funds are in your Pay Pal account, but you will need to pay the shipping costs on the vehicle before the the funds can be released and there is an extra (in this case $A800) amount in your Pay Pal account to cover the shipping costs. This email is not from Pay Pal and any transactions should be verified by phoning Pay Pal. This scam has opperated in various forms throughout the world almost since the inception of the internet. My eldest son just found out the hard way by paying the shipping/freight, costs without consulting me or his Mum and he lost $800.00 because of this. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone on the BMSC website.

Don't confuse PayPal with scams... I won't buy online unless its via PayPal after I had the misfortune of buying a HDD from a seller that deregistered his account before I received my goods. All of two minutes filling out a PayPal form and a few days later I got my money back thanks to their buyer's insurance.

Paypal is about one step away from a scam. It is NOT a financial institution. They do not comply with the relavent banking codes and they have been highly problematic in ways banks just simply are not allowed to be.

You would be well advised to just plain stay clear.

I agree. I had someone steal my Paypal details and then went on a spending spree. It took two weeks, but I got all the money back and they got the bad guy (so I am told).

Granted, its not a financial institution with all the prudential regulation etc, but who cares if they honour their business contract and the example above (from Miss) is why they exist.

Cheers

I recently got one of these emails due to a car I was selling.

The following is a bit long winded, however, I thought I would see how long I could string the spammer out for (It's called scambaiting).

Basically, he claims he is stuck at sea and can only pay via paypal as he cant access the Internet (what a crock).

Anyway, so far I am up to about three weeks of exchanges. Ive cut the following from our email exchanges.

It was a bit suss straight away as I'd listed the car for $19500 and straight away he comes in with an offer higher than the listed price.

(Spammer) just view your listing and i will like to offer you $19,700 for the car, please let me know asap if my offer is accepted because i need the car urgently.

(Me) Your offer is acceptable, however, if you want the car held, I need a non refundable deposit of $1000 paid to me in cash only, not via any electronic funds transfer.

(Spammer) Thanks for accepting my offer, i am buying the car as a birthday gift for dad and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the car to be a surprise for dad so i wont let him know anything about the car until it gets delivered to him , i am sure he will be more than happy with the car.I will be paying with paypal because i dont have access to my bank account online as i dont have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address so i can make the payments asap for the car and pls if you dont have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to Welcome - PayPal and get it set up , after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for
registration with paypal so as to put the money through.I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after i have made the payments.

(Me) Ben:

I'm very excited to hear you are a semen. I am a former naval member,
now incapacitated due to an accient at sea and am receiving a pension
from my government. TPI Federation Website

I think it is wonderful you want to buy my car for your dad. My
father was a semen but died in a boating accident many many years ago
(may he rest in peace).

I understand how hard it is to send email or get on the Internet due
to my experience of being at sea.

I have checked my Paypal account and for some reason it is not working
at the moment.

Could you send me a photo of you in your naval uniform please, it
would remind me of my dad.

In the meantime, I will try and get my paypal account fixed.

As you are a person who understands the ocean as a semen, I am
prepared to only ask you for $200 to hold the car.

I am sorry if you cant understand my email, as my accident at sea
affects me some days.

I really hope to hear from you soon, and really hope I can sell the
car to you as I miss my dad and would like to see this wonderful car
go to someone elses dad!

(Spammer) ohoo am sorry about your dad may his gently soul rest in peace if you got my mail i want you to give him 1mins silence and again i will try and send my picture when am in uniform but please just give me some time due to network problem.Try get an account with paypal and mail me your address you use to open so that i can easily made the payment as soon as possible.
awaits your response
ben

(Me) Ben my good semen friend, I have had trouble with my email and you may not have got some emails I sent you about my paypal account.

Please let me know if you are still interested as I do not want to
sell the car to anyone else.

I hope nothing bad has happened at sea.

(Spammer) still interested all i need is your pay pal id so i can made the payment asap.pls advice asap

(Me) Ben, this is great news for me. I too have good news for you! My accountant has been in touch with the paypal accounts and my account should be fixed by tomorrow. In the meantime, could you email me the contact details of your agent as I would like to commence arrangements with them for the delivery of the car. As you are a semen and obviously a good person, I would like to deliver the car personally. I hope you have not forgot about the photo. Thank you my friend

(me) Ben. I have some good news, my accountant has told me that my paypal account has been fixed. My accountant does not want me to give you the details till I get the details of your shipping agent. Can you send me his contact details please so I can keep my accontant happy.

(Spammer) ok mate,my agent contact detailes-scott nelsen he stays in pete and one of is contact line is 0405XXXXXX.pls mate is getting late let me know whats happening pls advice asap.
ben

(Spammer) whats going on,why the silence

(Me) Ben my semen friend, I am very confused by your last email as it was
very terse. Are you upset with me?

Maybe the water is very rough at sea and you could not type for too long?

I have been very sick due to my accident at sea and have not been able
to get to my computer, but I am much better now.

I am a little bit worried as my accountant has told me Paypal may not
be safe? He is a very silly man and I told him I will use Paypal.

I am thinking of sacking him as he charges me way too much with my
fees. He also talks too much and then charges me for the time he
spends talking too me.

I have not been able to contact your shipping agent and I am a little worried.

Could you please check the contact details and resend them to me.

As I am now better, and I have new medicine, I will be able to be in
contact with you more often.

Thank you my friend.

P.s. I have removed the add from the website as I have decided to only
sell the car to you.

P.s.s. Are you still going to send me the photo

There's nearly always tell-tale indicators associated with a scam (spoof) email.

Never EVER log into your account twice if asked to do so and you believe you've typed your email address and password correctly, and always check for the 'protected' icon in the bottom RH corner of the screen before entering any password or log-in details on any site that requires it.

I got hacked some time ago and had some stolen items of quite substantial value listed under my ebay account (USD value upwards of $30k); and have since learnt (through my own research and talking to those much wiser than I), to spot something that might not be legit.

Ebay, Paypal and nearly all financial institutions have almost round the clock technical support; so if you're ever unsure of something you may have received, contact them. They will be able to inform you as to whether or not the email (or whatever it may be) is legitimate or not.

I shop online for nearly everything I want to get; and have spent in excess of $40k offshore (including the Chevy) with literally dozens of different companies; with no trouble to speak of at all. Try to remember there's a lot of internet users in out there, and just like the 'real' World, the low-lifes are still very much the monority.

Off topic: Marcus, is there anything at all in life that you harbour some sort of positive vibe towards? Or do you hate/fear absolutely everything??
I can't honestly remember the last time you had anything positive to contribute to any thread on here... Take some happy pills dude...

I have sent my cyber-girlfriend, Svetlana, almost enough money to fly to Australia (first class) so we can get married. Now she says her sister (hotter and younger), Tatiana, would also like to marry me - ie two hot russian brides!!

I suspect I am being scammed, so how do I convince Svetlana just to send her sister.

Paypal has been incredibly useful for my business, with 9/10 customers using it vs bank deposit. They can freeze your account from time to time, and send strange verify this and that emails.

Ebay is a haven for scammers and those off loading stolen goods, while paypal offers buyer protection. I don't see how a payment gateway can be to blame, when they actually offer very good insurance against dodgy operators. Not only those out to scam people, but people who promise goods and take weeks to deliver.
