Who Introduced You?
How do we get more people involved? (in club motorsport)
How did you get involved?
I Joined The Toyota Car Club in 1988 (now Toyosports) with my next-door-neighbour, because the girl we worked with at the local Servo was a Member, and her Brother-in-Law was the President.
My vote is for "I knew someone"
...............for "off my own Bat"
................ for "Born into it"
............... for "fount it on the net"
I actually think I have the opportunity each week seeing about 100 people of which a few percent MUST be interested. I am too busy to do promo to them one on one, although if a motivated person out there wants to produce the junk mail, I will distribute it.
on topic again, Who got you in?

You could see 200 people if you could duplicate yourself and be in another state at the same time
Top idea. I am a no vote as I was born into it

I knew someone: Pete Ewing.
When I met him he was doing hillclimbs, supersprints, khanas and stuff, which I was already interested in - but I didn't know how to take the next step (plus I was working on weekends back then).
Eventually I got a real job and he lent me a drive in his Galant at Huntley hillclimb.

I have to have words to Pete Ewing.
I went to school with Damien Long. Used to service (tag along and ask dumb man-child questions) for John and Damian in their escort. I was about 14.

Joined the Mini club to get a discount on my insurance. There was a club Khanacross the day after the first meeting I went to, so I went and had a look-see. All downhill from there.

My dad raced sprintcars. The speedway in Canberra was in decline, and a guy I was doing Year 12 with (Steve Littlehales) did work experience at this place called Johanson Rotary.
After being introduced to rally cars and going along to a few club meetings, I ended up doing a stop control in Greenhills out of the back of my old man's panel van.

My best mate through high school was way into rally (spectating only, he never got involved) - he got me hooked. I ended up staying with it but he lost interest and spent his money on a fishing boat instead...
I later ended up friends with a guy in yr 11 and 12, later on I found out his father used to run an RX-3 rally car (Les Smith). I almost started my rallying back then, I was going to navigate for him in the intro rally in the Southern Cross, but his Corolla broke before we even joined a club and that was the end of it.
In the end I joined the CHDSCC of my own accord three years ago, when I moved up here for uni. It's been all downhill from there on in.
So, my vote is sort of a combo of knowing someone and off my own bat.

Born to it. Dad raced Touring cars (real ones - FJ Holden, Studebaker Lark and Austin A95 Westminster) in the 60s and a Formula Vee of his own design and construction.
I had no chance.

My Dad raced dirt bikes (Enduros)
His best mate raced road bikes
I think my Dad may have looked at me racing Go Karts (I was a tomboy I admit it) the money wasn't there though
I was made aware of the WRX club in Victoria when I bought my WRX. I never joined, but was made aware of the WRX club in NSW when I moved up here and started posting on Rexnet, they invited us on a club cruise to Wollombi - then back via Putty Rd!

Paul Tams dragged me and Aaron along to ROC a couple of times till Aaron got his licence.
I still remember spending about 6 hours at Colby Court watching incar and stareing at Ed's Evo cause I begged Paul to let me come.
Competiton- Bernie Webb, Ty Hooper and Dale Webb.
I made the mistake of saying at a LCCC meeting that I was looking to buy a car. Ty the car salesman took me around and showed me the LB Lancer. So I bought it.
2 Weeks later I get a call from Bernie Webb which went a bit like this...
"So you bought Tys old Car"
"Yep... Can't wait to drive it"
"Do you have any plans for the Dell?"
" Not really.... I was gonna go watch"
" Well your entering it. Just be at scruitneering on Wednesday and we'll sort everything out"
"F**** Me..."
And he did. Dale Naved and we serviced with Rob Nunn's crew with Daniel "upside down first corner" Andres... Yes... I know.... You still beat me...
Good times.

the missus..
Heyehy (Byron) and my wife conspired behind my back to get me a rallyschool voucher for my 30th.
I remember at the end of the day after our last drive (but before our hot lap) Ian Barret asked around the group "What had we learned?". Various people around the group mentioned braking or turning methods. I was last and I replied "..that I want one."
Then I bought a Capella.......

A friend with a brand new RS2000 (it was 1980) got a pamphlet under his windscreen for the Canberra Escort car club while he was parked at the Woden Plaza. A bunch of us decided to go along to a meeting and ended up joining. There were a few guys there that were involved in rallying and we started out servicing for them and doing controls for events. We use to make an annual trip down to the Alpine and do several controls over the weekend, Then in 1984 I bought a car off a couple of the Members (Phil Cook & David Thompson) and started competing. Have never looked back.
