ACT Forests Recreation User Group
Last night was the first ACT Forests Forest Recreation User Group meeting. It was interesting, and I think positive.
There were representatives from Trail-bike riders (predominantly the Dual Sport Motorcycle Riders Association), Mountain bikers, roganers (SP?), orienteers, equestrian groups, bushwalkers (Walking for Pleasure), Paintball operators, gundog groups and of course rally people.Rallying was represented by Jenny Boyd (Subaru Rally of Canberra), Frank Brookhouse (Light Car Club of Canberra, myself (Brindabella Motor Sport Club) and Neal Bates as a forest user.
The draft plan for Pierces forest was on display (which was very interesting to look at), and the Uriarra plan was discussed. Both plans are going to be forwarded to the club. It was interesting to see what areas where being replanted this year and next year, and what road modifications were proposed... basically getting rid of a lot of unusable roads, although there were some that we'll be discussing with Forestry.
A lot of issues were discussed and ideas presented, on things such as forest access and fencing and gates, facilities provided in forests (parking, toilets and barbecues), coordination of users, communication between user groups, road quality and maintenance and fees and charges.
The best thing to come out of the night was the bringing together of the user groups, and it looks like it will be an ongoing thing for recreational users to get together with ACT Forests and discuss what's goign on in our forests.
They're taking away all the suggestions from the night to work on the draft plan, and then will consult with the user groups again to try to make sure they've covered the requirements.
A positive step, and a positive meeting.

Top work. That really is the most positive news we've had on the future for ACT rallying in a long time. The list of contacts will be helpful, but most beneficial will be ACT Forests' attitude toward consultation. Nice one.
Look forward to seeing the Pierces and Uriarra plans.

Yeah, it was encouraging.
The downside was the confirmation of the designs on Bluetts, Greenhills and Stromlo as residential developments in the future.* But we all had to recognise that it was really only a matter of time before that happened.
Who's up for organising a "Farewell to Greenhills"?
Bluetts (x2), Greenhills (x2), Stromlo, Stromlo Jr. and Poo Farm.
* - It wasn't like we were going to lose these areas tomorrow, but they are definitely on the ACT Government radar for residential development.

Farewell to Greenhills would almost be enough to provoke me to buying a fully prepared car and having a go... Sounds great to me!

I'd be into that, sounds like a plan. Add pipeline to make it the full deal.
Seriously, if those that understand the current constraints think it is remotely possible given that it would be the final fling, I'm up for it. Might have to have a ring in CofC on the day so I could compete though!

This is similar to what I'd proposed for the DELL - but was told to stop dreaming....
I was also told the Poo Farm road is as rough as guts, and that ACTEw wouldn't grade it for us.
If it is possible..... should we try and make it possible???

Oh, make no mistake, you'd have to fight tooth and nail to make it happen. And we'd have to pay for Poo Farm road to be graded, 'cause it is in an awful state.
But if it was the "last hurrah", I think it'd be worth it.
And I think Tort's right. We'd have to contract in a CofC for it, 'cause everyone I can think of would want to compete in it!

Mawk, Jenny and I were talking about how good this would be, after RoC last year.
Count me in, be it course car or competitor!
Fro, any timeframe on it? I believe Kowen is also on the radar, but they've been talking 10+ years for it. Wonder if Kowen could be fed as a sacrifice to stall the development of the good 'forests'?

Where would you rather live, somewhere near Civic, or somewhere near Queanbeyan? Kowen will be around for a while...

Wether it's true or not I heard that to grade Poo Farm it was going to cost in the vicinity of 60 big ones from ACTEW.

Fro, How important is that, really? People are still buying Conder, Amaroo and Dunlop like crazy...
And I figure Stromlo and co are going to be more politically sensitive.
Hmm, maybe that's a big factor in developing those forests quickly - placate the existing residents about fire risk by putting other people in the way... They'd have to strike while the memories are fresh though...

How much difference would it be from Kowen to Greenhills? The land value (per square metre) in Greenhills would have to be significantly greater than that out at Kowen. Like factors of 5 at least. Greenhills would be an upper-class suburb (like Isaacs), as opposed to suburban sprawl (aforementioned northern/southern extremities).
I hope that there is a public outcry, and that those forests are preserved. But even if they were preserved, I think vehicular access (for rally cars and trail bikes and such) would be one of the things to change.
Trying to be realistic, without being defeatist...

Maybe we could have a working bee on Poo farm Rd like we did for Hyles the other day.
Rick would probably love to bring his truck out again for a fang.
