Rally of Canberra
Hey
Im new to this board and new to going to the rally of canberra, and want to know . Can you go and see the trial runs and reconissance during the week ? and how do you get access ?
And during the weekend can you stand anywhere along the track or is there 1 or more spots where you can stand only ? and is there a big group of people if and where you have to stand ? like how close can you get to the track ?

Spectator Access
Friday you can see plenty of action at the Mineshaft, I think its about $15.50 for a day pass. Saturday is in Kowen with a big spectator point. and Sunday at Bluetts with the stage being run 3 times.
The closest you can get to the cars is by being an official. The spectating is not the same as you see in World Rallies in Europe where the spectators in some cases are actually lining the rally route.

you cant really go out to reccie or testing. and prolly wouldnt want to go to reccie. as far as testing, i imagine there are all sorts of insurance issues there. best if you pay your money and go to the designated speccie points over the weekend.

Correct. There is concern about risk to safety, and it is a real concern. There are members of this forum who still grieve over a tragic incident back a few years now where there was loss of life.
You sound new to the sport, and as such, it would be fair for me to say without trying to be offensive to you, that you are precisely the sort of person that rally organisers wouldn't like to see unsupervised near the action. When you've been "in the game" for quite a few years, then you learn what areas are "safe" (anything within about 100 metres still has room for a major unforseen catastrophe) and what areas are distinctly "dangerous".
Here, I'll make you an offer. I'm going out spectating on the Friday, and maybe Saturday as well. If you're interested, you can tag along with me. My only conditions are these: No alcohol and no foul language. I'm a Christian, so if you want to come along, those are fair conditions.

Media accrediation is very strictly handed out. From what I understand, if you don't have media accreditation for this event by now, it is too late to apply.
You must be 'sponsored' by a legitimate business with an ABN number. You must have PROOF that you will be covered by said business with a full Workers Compensation scheme. You must PROVE that said business has full public liability insurance for your work.
And even then, the ROC management are now very strict about where accredited media can be located. It used to be "open slather" if you had media accrediation, but not any more. 1996 and the rear bumper of a certain red 240Z changed all that!
Ozzidave, call me on 0410 409 248 and I can give you the 'run down' on some of this stuff a lot quicker and easier than I can type it. And if I was going to give you any 'inside information', I certainly wouldn't do it on this forum, you know what I mean?
If you're still keen to get a good private spectating spot, ring the Rally Office ASAP and ask to do Road Closures. But, by now, all the good ones are probably taken.

Ben - I think the Z missed, I belive it was the airborn coppers log that got him Shows even people that don't drive sometimes suffer brain fade
OzziDave I belive that John is still looking for road closures, and if you want to be at the front at a speci point you gotta be early at least 1/2 hour. I agree, R/C are the best way to see it, take a chair and a bottle of coke and sit and enjoy, - no V8 chopheads (to borrow Marks termanology) to tell you how their VH CrummyDoor is "heaps faster man", just piece, dirt and AntiLag

Yeh if you've bought a ticket I don't think you'll get a refund - Your age isn't a problem. Basicaly as a road closure your job is to ensure no one can enter the stage from the road you are closing - you won't get a better place to take photos from cause you're there by yourself (or with a mate). Give rally HQ a ring, the number is somewhere in this thread - maybe ticktek will refund if you help out, I don't know. Enjoy!!

If thats the official stance, so be it - It was never a problem before, as long as the job was done properly but rules is rules I guess - If you want to get a good photo at the speci points get there early and find a spot that no one can stand in your way (very hard to find, up a tree is good )
