Wasn't the Canberra Stages Mike Morriss's event, and the pre cursor to the Nat Cap.

2004 date was the 8-9 May 2004.
I was thinking about the gap between 1982 and 1987. There were a few events listed below which were NSW State Championship rallies from Canberra. Was this the largest events in Canberra during the time?
1983: ?? Think it was the Belconnen Mall Safari Rally
1984: Esso Giralang Rally
1985: Aerospatiale National Capital Rally (2-day event)
1986: Canberra Off-Road National Capital Rally (2 day event)
1987: Mcdonalds National Capital Rally

Bogan is correct. The 2003 started on the 25th April and finished on the 27th April. It was the last three day event for ROC.

I would like to suggest that the 1973 Roadmaster and GT Sales Rally was probably the first Rally of Canberra 'concept'. If I recall, Peter Lang was the architect of this style of event and he was the Director of this rally, and I think also the Director of the first Don Capasco in 1974 (could be wrong on this one).

I can help with some of the info about the rallies. 88 was the first. MB had a major issue with the forestry in Gosford. He came to vist me on business in early 88 and we got talking about resurecting an event like the Castrol. We went for drive to Smiths Rd and then out to Bluetts, Greenhills and the rest is history.
MB was astounded by Smiths Rd. We even put foward a "Pike Peak" type of event for Smiths Rd to channel 9. moster was going to drive in it.
We cobbled up Esanda for 10k and we were of. Far cry from the money we got for the 2GO.....

More widely know as the last part of the Angle Crossing Stage.
The stage started on the uphill after Angle Crossing. You eventually got to a T-Junction. When the stage turned right towards Tharwa you were on Smiths Road.
A very fast piece of road with a big cavaletti jump in it. Became too fast for RoC as did Lady Denman Drive.

So the angle crossing road wasn't used after the crossing (going towards Michelago)? That's the best bit. Coming from Tharwa, then, Smiths Rd would be uphill and way fast. If you started the stage after the T going towards Michelago I reckon it could be run.

From memory, this was run in 89, and there were a number of problems with the NSW residents, I know we spent a lot of time on the phone with them.
Kevin Roben could probly tell you more, as he was the Stage Commander, I seem to recall he had problems with someone requiring access at the start TC which became rather heated. I'm sure MB would remember if you happen to be chatting.
We had some great times at these events over the years, met a lot of good people that we are still bumping into at the SRoC!
