Blanks - Don Capasco to Castrol to ROC
Hi guys,
I need some help from some of the more knowledgeable people out there to fill in some serious blanks in my Canberra timeline.
My limited understanding is that the '74 Don Capasco is essentially the start of what could be regarded as the modern day Rally of Canberra, with the Castrol's, Esanda's and FAI's filling in the middle.
What I need assistance with is the years the events ran (I know there were some years in the 80's that had no event), the corresponding event name (where I'm having mental blanks) and the really hard one - the event dates.
Any help greatly appreciated, I'm working on an event report archive (including photos and results) to be posted to both rally.com.au and bmsc.com.au.
Thanks!
Ryan Lahiff

88 or 89 was the Esanda. I have an Esanda poster with Murrays Mazda on it. Also parts of a Sloppy Jo somewhere.
Mike B had his heart attack at the first one and Al Vaughan took over as clerk of course if memory serves me right.
Sarah Manuel or Mike Bell would be the people to talk to.
Wayne Kenny and Kevin Roben were both Clerks of Course for the event.
Oh, and Lyndall slept in for one of them when navigating for Paul Lahiff.

'88 was the first Esanda in Cbr, and from memory '85 was the first under this sponsorship and run out of Gosford to Taree, then Coffs Hbr the next, then only as far as Buldelah, but the "lineage" of the event really goes back to the original Dunlop 2GO, the brainchild of MB, which I think was first run in '81?. So I guess this years RoC could, at a stretch, be considered the 26th? running, complete with the original CoC!.

Between 1983 and 1987, the 2GO state round under Mike Bell became an international status event. It is led to believe that this event led to the present day ROC. This event saw an influx of Japanese drivers as well as Malcolm Wilson:
1983 - 1987 - (2GO/Esanda Rally - Central Coast and North)
It was then transferred to the ACT in 1988 and has been run since under a variety of names:
1988 - 1989 - (Esanda Rally of Australia - ACT)
1990 - (FAI Rally of Canberra)
1991-1994 - (Esanda Rally of Canberra)
1995 - (Healthpac Rally of Canberra)
1996 to 2000 - (FAI Rally of Canberra)
2001 to present (Subaru Rally of Canberra)

If I remember correctly though the event didn't run in '98. This was due to a date switch from November to April/May when the event became part of the APRC.
The event ran Nov '97 and then April '99.

Working on the basis of a purely Canberran timeline (therefore discounting the '83 to '87 2GO/Esanda's) I currently have a draft that looks something like:
1974 Don Capasco
1975 Don Capasco
1976 Castrol International Rally
1977 Castrol International Rally
1978 Castrol International Rally
1979 Castrol International Rally
1980 Castrol International Rally
1981 Castrol International Rally
1982 Canberra Stages
1988 Esanda Rally of Australia - ACT
1989 Esanda Rally of Australia - ACT
1990 FAI Rally of Canberra
1991 Esanda Rally of Canberra
1992 Esanda Rally of Canberra
1993 Esanda Rally of Canberra
1994 Esanda Rally of Canberra
1995 Healthpact Rally of Canberra
1996 FAI Rally of Canberra
1997 FAI Rally of Canberra (28-30 November)
1998 * Event Not Run
1999 FAI Rally of Canberra (7-9 May)
2000 FAI Rally of Canberra (5-7 May)
2001 Subaru Rally of Canberra (4-6 May)
2002 Subaru Rally of Canberra
2003 Subaru Rally of Canberra
2004 Subaru Rally of Canberra
2005 Subaru Rally of Canberra (22-24 April)

2003 it was three days, ran Anzac weekend and they didn't start on the Friday until after midday out of respect to the diggers. I think I still have three day passes number 1 and 2 for the 2002 event (my first and only as a spectator) at home, so I can find the dates for you off them if you need me to.

Does everyone except me know who Don Capasco is/was? Can anyone enlighten me?

I believe they were a brake manufacturer, pads & linings. Possibly part of Bendix or someone these days. I thinK they traded as "Don Brake Linings". Just had a quick look on google, could see some references to the rally itself, a feature in RSNews on Greg Carr, and a thread on here as well. More research required, back to RMV2006 road book, much more important!

I thought Don Capasco was bought out by Ferodo?

Ryan, I'll have a look at home for some of the old roadbooks etc. Adrian or Fiona will have some of this stuff as well with the required dates etc.
