Subaru 1600 dl 1977 Rally car
I have recently bought a Subaru 1600 deluxe FWD 1977 and just wondering has anyone got any info or pictures of these cars in rally form, whether it be in australia or internationaly. I have searched everywhere for info and cant seem to find anything, so any help would be great. The earliest info i could find on Subaru's in rally was in early to mid 80' Subaru leone's. Also i thought id add is im not going to do it as a rally car just need some info thats all Thanks Goran(P.S if you need a pic of the car so you can remember what they look like ill post it up)

There were "works" Subarus in the mid-'70s Southern Crosses. You'd need to find someone with a comprehensive collection of "Racing Car News" for photos (which would be tiny anyway).

The cars they originally ran in the 'Cross in the late '70s were the original 2wd models, drastically underpowered but this matched their grip perfectly.
Not sure if the later 2dr 4wd turbo they originally bought in with the special rally deal ever made the 'Cross, but they were run in the ARC of the time.
Barry Lake springs to mind as a co-driver in the 2wds & I think they were painted frog green.
Ed Mulligan, Rob Herridge & maybe Barry Lowe??? ring a bell in the 4wd cars.
There will be some tragics out there with info, just need to unearth them!

Thanks guys for shedding some light on these cars. But has anyone got any old videos or home videos of the southern cross rally 75-78 or has remembered seening them in the southern cross rally video so i can buy some if they are still available. As they wernt the most popular car in their time let alone a popular rally car, as i have found out trying to find some parts for them. Have tried sydney,Canberra and have rang a lot of melbourne wreckers. But did manage to find one in canberra but it was a wagon and cant seem to contact the owner of the car Goran

Hey Bob, how many rallies do you think you've done? You're a bit of a legend if you ask me.

Try contacting Garry Elliot via Thornleigh Car Club.
He may have some info as he ran a green one in club motorsport for many years.
I navigated for him at Jenolan one year. As I recall we were about 200 metres from the finish when the thing spat a CV joint. As it was uphill to the finish line the car was going no further but I raced up to the finish and booked in anyway, only to be disqualified later for not completing 100% of the course. We argued till we were black & blue that the supp regs only stated that "crews" must complete 100% of the course and that they didn't say anything about the car, but 'twas to no avail.

About 80 - but over half were in the '70s.

Only in my own mind!
I was just very fortunate that I was able to compete in some of the "biggies" of the '70s: Southern Crosses, Heatway (NZ), Don Capasco/Castrols, etc. (But not as fortunate as Graham Thompson and his Monte Carlos!)
I was also very fortunate to meet some of the real legends of the early '70s: people in the works teams, particularly Mitsubishi and BMC (!!!). Through them I got to look over the works cars. Both the cars and the people were a great inspiration to a young guy with delusions of competence.
Who never really grew up.
So, not a legend - just very lucky.

I'm pretty sure he has written up about it...or perhaps talked about it at a meeting?
I seem to remember hearing about it somewhere along the way.
I've drawn a blank on the car(s) though...memory is flagging a Volvo...but that could be his round Australia thingy.
