Little yellow Taxi
VK Rally Car
I bought the ex Doug Briscoe Commodore from Queensland in 2003. It had been through a few hands before I got a look at it and wasn’t in the best ever condition having done about 60 odd rally’s. I few up in the morning first thing paid the money, filled the car full of spares and then drove it home. A 23 hour trip all up, with it breaking down 9 times between Campbelltown and the ACT due to an over heating holley fuel pump.
After fixing it up a bit, I did the first rally in it about 6 months later (The Dell 04) ended coming 5th, made the ABC news for losing it at the spectator point in grand style. Since then I’ve done a few different rally’s in it, Starmart, Minidulla, BRM, a rally sprint and lent it out to a few mates to compete when I had something else on.
It’s a pretty interesting car to drive, sort of like sitting in a big couch with a roll cage and 400hp. It sort of stops ok for 1440kg, sort of steers ok if you steer it with the back and not the front, but the main thing it sort of goes ok. It powers up hill real good and in private testing beat a road going evo 6 up to about 180km/h…. by about half a guard. It pulled consistent low 1.14 around Wakefield with serious fuel surge problems and rally suspension, which I’m pretty happy with all things considered.
Things have been a bit slow in the last 18 months. Since the 05 Alpine, I pulled the group A Getrag out for a look and it had pretty badly pitted 2nd & 3rd gears. Looked into it a bit and it turns out it’s got a 5 gear Hollinger set in it. After doing the sums and considering that I didn’t like the shift pattern all that much, I decided to throw a little bit more cash at it and replace it with a 4 speed Jerico from a NASCAR. After driving with it, im pretty happy that I did. It’s great to drive and should handle the new power with out any hassles. (Getrag for sale if anyone wants it)
The new power is coming about since the old motor cried enough at the last lap of the day at Wakefield Park. The old motor made 180rwkw at autotech in Canberra and was pretty good for what it was. The new one should be in the car in a month or 2 and will hopefully go a bit better, with improved heads, more compression, another 1.3L in capacity
All in preparation for the 07 Alpine.
Other things on the wish list are:
Proper 8 throttle body fuel injection
Straighten the diff
New adjustable front end
A Diet 1440kg is a porker
Airconditioning
A new shell if I get keen
A shed

This car was an awesome car back when it was in the hands of Mark 'Darkie' Barr Smith from Holbrook NSW.
I had a ride in it at a rallysprint up in Carabost Forest when i was about 10 i think, it was running on seven cylinders, and with myself not being able to see over the dash it made for an interesting ride pushing myself out of the seat as far as i could to see where we were, even running on seven cylinders Darkie running as 0 car still managed to set one of the fastest times of the day.
Im sure my brother Deano thats on here can tell a few more stories as he codrove for my Dad as a 0 car in pouring down rain at the Hella classic stages in Carabost around 1997.

Wow. Didn't realise your Commodore was "that" Commodore. I navved for Darkie Barr Smith in it at a Batemans Bay state round and at Rally of Canberra the same year - 1994 I think, just before Darkie left to live in the UK to work for Roger Clark.
I had previously navved for Doug Briscoe in it at the Margot Creek Rallysprint, near Carabost - 1993 maybe. It was my most successful event ever, in that I came 1st outright (with Kevin Roben) and 3rd outright (with Doug) in the same event. Was a bit cheesed off that I only scored one trophy and one lot of points towards the Prime TV Rallysprint Series pointscore! As there was probably only 20-30 or so cars entered in that rallysprint, remember getting really dizzy towards the end of the day from jumping straight from one car into the other to nav in both - with Kevin and Doug using totally different pacenoting systems. Sure made for a busy but fun day!
Doug owned that car twice - sold it to Darkie, bought it back off Darkie due to his UK sojourn, then later passed it to Peter Dimmock as part exchange/payment for his Evo.

Ah, yep. Lucky guess Andrew. Didn't get to bed until 4:15am this morning (if you discount the 7 minutes lying awake listening to her squirm/cry at 3am).

Quick up date:
Club Munyard came through with the good heads. Jakes performance came through with the good tune. 270kw at the wheels. It now makes as much power as the old motor at 2000rpm.
I believe that now I will leave the motor alone.
