Oh yeah, it sure is. A true old timer. I'm more and more amazed it's survived this long. I'm also amazed Leon confirmed what we suspected was it's history before Old Man Emu. Rebuilding in it's old Southern Cross war paint just might be now necessary.

Not in any of my current cars, they're too young. Besides, don't do enough night stages these days to worry about it.

Thank you for sharing some history Leon, some very interesting tidbits there. Must be good for you to have the vehicle pop up again too.

Just sitting here with one of Georges navigators - Bob Lumby
Thanks for the pics
The small area to the drivers side of the base of the back seat held the spare oil. When we ran it in the Kaiser Stuhl Cold Duck rally out Gulgong way to bed it down for Southern Cross, the metal frame for the oil containers ruptured one of the oil cans and we had oil all over the car.
Thanks for your efforts in restoring the old beast

We really need to have a beer or two with you guys so we can find out as much as possible and restore it properly - and with respect to it's past. Having a car that was a real Group G vehicle is one thing, now knowing it's also goes back the Southern Cross is another.
We're tossing up on either for full blown Group G as it was as Road And Rally or try to do it as it was for the Southern Cross. I think we're leaning towards Group G with Kahler Southern Cross warpaint, because doing a full original restore is going to be impossible. And I think giving respect to it's past is important, acknowledging what it has been through it's life.
Let us know what you think. Hopefully we'll get the old bastard going sometime this year once again.

Bob still lives in NSW so he might be able to help
I used to live in Glenbrook, which would have been easy, but Brisbane is a bit further away.
I believe that one of the guys in Christian Autosports in NSW has one of the original publicity posters we did for the Southern Cross, so if you contact them from their website you might be able to get a colour copy to help with resto

There is a snap on autopics very close to the one from RD Mullet on the previous page.
This might be the link
BTW.... there is some fantastic Aussie racing memories on that site. Esp for people like me with rose coloured memories of classic early eighties sports sedan racing.

Some more cool info...thanks for sharing it. For updates not a huge amount, just then managed to take the doors off, vacuumed some of the dirt and stuff around rust spots in the floorpan, few holes here and there but not too serious. What next...

The rust near the leg of the roll cage will be a PITA to fix - its obviously rusted from inside the sill area there into the cabin.
I like the boxed section on the transtunnel presumably for the shifter, and the light relief to accomodate the starter.
What is the flat section running along the bottom part of the transtunnel from the starter bulge back to the rail for the seat mount?
