Pete spoke to me about the floor. You're welcome to anything you need from the floor in the front-cut.

Thank you very much, I'll probably take that offer up at sometime...
buzz hopefully not too bad, maybe I'll be lucky at it just extends a bit further. The floorpan is double layered so the waters just got in between the two layers somehow.
Flat section I'm not sure, it's not standard? Maybe reinforcement...

Did a second coat on the engine bay, wouldn't really look much different in photos so none taken. Now just need to fix rusty floorpans and put things back in!

Hunter, any chance of an update on the rebuild? Appologies for digging up an old thread but it's just too interesting to leave hidden away.

George kahler's daughter
Hi, I found your post yesterday while googling my dad's name~ and saw that you are doing up his old rally car? How is that going? I would love to see some more photos of it. Its a bit of him that holds some memories, which is special to me as he passed away over ten years ago. My older brother does some rally driving, Peter Kahler.
If you could reply back to me that would be great.
My email address is serendipity078@gmail.com
Kind Regards,
Bek Kahler

Hey Bek,
Glad to hear from you! We were awfully surprised when we found out whose car it originally was but also very pleased we had such a bit of history. We have it in a shed in a lot of pieces at present and dealing with the rust (not much progress lately...) and hopefully we'll have it running at the end of the year. We will almost certainly make it look externally like how it was when George rallied it.

I bought it about 14 years ago from it's previous owner. It really hasnt done an awful lot in my hands but I have a picture on the wall when I competed in the ARC with it.
The car really does have an amazign history.

We also finally did a bunch of work on it.
Sadly there's timworm to be rid of
But not that much
Those cars are TINY!
The car's mascot WUG
Grinders are good things to be rid of rust
Always use safety equipment
It's a bit cleaner now and a lot less rusty. We have a LOT of work to do, but we also have as a result of this thread done a positive id on certain items in the car that confirm this is George Kahler's old RX2. So now we have a known earliest event of the the 72 Southern Cross.
We also came to a decision on what to do now we are actively getting this beast back together - it's going to be driveline wise as it was in Group G, but the exterior we are coming up with a mix of the OZY war paint and Kahler signage, plus finding a tribute to it's Old Man Emu days as well.
We're now officially targeting the 2011 Southern Cross and hope to have it back on it's wheels by the end of August.

Great car with a hell of a lot of genuine rally history. Deserves to return as a genuine classic in it's full glory, which we are working on.
Let alone a genuine Series 1 coupe is seriously worth preserving in the first place

Hi Guys.
Just to fill in a bit more history on this car.
Below is a pic from Catalina in 1989 when Peter Godden was driving it with Leon Prgomet in the NSW Speed Event Series.
After this, it was altered slightly to conform with the Group 2E Club Car regs, which meant the original headlights and grill went back on (you had to run original sized lights and have no cutouts in the grille or body work), small flares and 13x7 wheels went on to replace the 14" wheels in the Catalina pic.
Here's a pic of Leon driving it at Oran Park in it's 2E Club Car spec.
After Peter and Leon built an RX-7 for Club Car racing in the early 90's, the RX-2 was sold to a guy named Derek and it was converted back into rally spec with a 12A Mild Port from memory. At some point in the early 90's I believe it was crashed quite heavily again, into a bank possibly, and from that point I lost track of the car.
You guys might find this article interesting as well, from late 1979 I believe.

OKAY, lets do a history update that we have now found again.....
Basics -
1970 Series 1 RX2, genuine Aust delivery so absolutly stuff all left of them
Believed to be first rally in 1972 and also did the 1973 Southern Cross in the hands of George Kahler
1977 was part of the Old Man Emu team, went to Road and Rally
Sort of disappeared around 1980 into club events but did the 79 SC, re-emerged after a massive crash to become the Road and Rotary RX2 that occasionally was written about in Modern Motor in the late 80's as a Group 2E / Group G car. Still holds the Group 2E record around Catalina
Destroyed again, rebuilt again and converted to PRC, Went to Derrick Bray (?)
Went to Nigel Williams, then went to me.
Now with HD under full restoration that is taking longer than we would like but we will get there one day and aiming for a return to the 2011 Southern Cross
