My Series 2
Hey guys
I thought I better post up some pics and specs of what Iv done since my first event at Nic Trans intro rally last year.
I started out with a fairly stock Rx7, a rough finish silver faded two tone paint, heavy duty springs and standard shocks, s5 13b motor with niki carb, a standard S2 gearbox which gave me grief in 3rd the entire time and a make-shift light rack.
I had a great time at my first rally and came 12th out of the other intro competitors (there was only 13, the last one was a DNF )
Then I decided to get a bit more serious and I wanted to build my own.
It now has a 9point cage, seam welded, two pak paint,12a (13b died) ,rebuilt s4 turbo gb ,two Sparco sprinter seats, terratrip and terraphone, improved bash plate, 2.5" exhaust, 48mm webber, fuel reg,Davis Craig twin thermos,Bosch coils, 85amp alt ,roof vents, locked diff with 3.9 for now . Also fabricated up some spacer plates to raise the car up a bit higher to get some ground clearance.
I have KYB shocks in their that I don't think will last too long and I'm not sure on what people recommend for good suspension for these as I heard the struts are pretty weak. But I have been thinking of welding some sort of supports to the struts to maybe get some more life out of them, I just wanted to see what the go was before I spent my money on 4 sets of struts that wont hold. what do people think?
Its taken me just over a year to build
Heres a few pics, Ill post up some newer ones soon.
I think its gonna be a sweat box

Good stuff.
KYBs are the best cheap rally shock out there.
Bilsteins are the next step up, but the real problem you face is that the standard front strut tubes are too small (in diameter) and nothing that fits in there will be very strong. In this case, upside down style inserts (like Bilsteins) will be WEAKER than the KYBs - but they will work better before you bust 'em.
The solution is either to fit other struts or have larger diameter tubes welded onto the RX-7 stubs, and then use some 'real size' strut inserts. A PM to Daveee would be worthwhile, as he and his dad did quite a bit of research on this topic recently.
If you've got the money, Proflex is the winner. Failing that, there's been a heap of discussion on suspension on these forums - an hour or seven with the Search function will give you more info and opinions that you can probably handle.

You can go silly like we did and fit RX5 front struts (Good luck finding some). Stub angles are correct, but you have to cut them down to fit in. You can fit 240K front hubs/Peugeot discs and graft on series 4 calipers on if you want to get it to stop real good.
Have to stop now, reminiscing over the beast brings a tear to the eye

I have also thought about going down the entire, s5 front end with rack and pinion steering, so that would give me decent shockers plus the advantage of better steering and mid mount motor. I think I might just stick with what I have and see how I go.
I took it out the hills of Clare today for its first ever run, I think I need to rejet the 48mm webber as it has a major flat spot and seems very sluggish.

RX-5 struts? Got some. Shoot me a PM if you want to go down that path.
R&P conversion isn't really legal for PRC - it's been tried and I'm pretty sure the eligibity commission said "we don't think so" but by then, the car had been sold to a new owner who prefered the steering box, so it never got pushed.

So the CAMS Manual says for Group 3C – PRC Rally Cars:

“Freedom” suggests to me the addition deletion and modification there of, but apparently you can't add them... What a complete load of 5h1t!!! If there isn't freedom for this part, either don't use the word freedom or don't list racks.
I'm glad CAMS don't run the country they would make any politician look good...

But where does it give you freedom to delete the steering box?
I know it's a load of stinking old datsun, but until the argument is had properly with the eligibility commission, it will remain an argument.

Don't delete it, just bolt it somewhere low in the car where it can't fly out and hurt someone..

Is a re-spray to a lighter and more dirt-compatible colour on the cards? It shows up real well...
Looks good.

It was great fun out there on Sunday. Iam still getting over a cold at the moment. It has actually been sprayed in gun-metal Grey in 2 pac paint for rally, now it shows up dust so bad is a bit of a problem. Ill just wait till the paint shreds and paint it somthing else.
