Log booked to M2C2 tarmac specs. Which is
M2 = Cars having a 0-60mph acceleration time from a standing start of 4.8 to 6.8 seconds in standard form.
C = Contemporary 1998 Onwards
2 = Capacity 2501cc to 3500cc
The CAMS Modern Tarmac Rally rules are pretty strict on what you are allowed to do to the car so unfortunately any FI option is out. Though there is a company in Germany that does a twin turbo kit for it that takes it to 650Hp
There are still some options open in the rules for NA mods so I will investigate these but I'm pretty much at the limit of what's allowed for the Modern Class.
Car is a heavy pig of a car, though removing the front and rear seats has saved a bit of weight as the front seats were 70kG each. I will be removing the rest of the interior when I get around to it but I'm under no illusions of beating the WRX's and Evo's who are always in my class. I'm in this for fun and the car is a bit different to what you usually see in these type of events so suits me to a T.
Cheers Alastair

Nice one Alistair. Your car would sure be a lot of fun.
What size is the bash plate? Just wondering what size most tarmac cars run.
Andrew
p.s. Our scrutineers wouldn't like the limited amount of roll cage padding, they would require you to have it the whole way up the a-pillar bars etc. Just make sure it is enough so that you don't get stopped from running events.

Looks very nice.
A couple of quick things.
Do you really need to run 2 spares. If you have to stop and change 1 you are down 2 minutes minimum anyway. And directional tyres will run reverse direction without too much time lost.
Put a cover of the bits and pieces you have in the rim space. Last thing you want is a jack handle coming into the front seat. Make a couple of loops out of thick cable ties for the straps to pass through so it does not go anywhere. Or better still, a seperate jack mount.
Do you need the cd player and speakers. A small 1gig mp3 player with fm radio plugged into the intercom will save you a few kilos also.
With your fire extimguishers, reverse mount them, so the head is under the seat. That way you will only kick the bottom end of them instead of the sharp head and trigger end whne you get in and out or move around.
Make a foot brace for your navigator. They will love you for it.

Thanks, the bash plate is 5mm thick, I've included a pic below from the manufacturers website showing the plate on a MKIV Golf. The R32 has all the rear drive shaft diff etc covered at the rear from the factory so I haven't added anything behind this yet but would probably upgrade the rear protection if I was to enter the car in a dirt event.
As for the cage padding the car has been checked by CAMS scrutineer at it's intital log book approval and at numerous events now and has passed each time. Though I'll get them to double check before the next big event which is Mt Buller in November. I have plenty of spare padding so it's not a problem if I need to add more.
Cheers Alastair

Hi Smee,
2 spares are only to take to the event, I only run one in the car on any stages. I've got a cover for the tools and will put that on but where can I get a separate jack mount and how do they mount?
The Radio and CD player have been removed from the car, they were where the kill switch is now mounted. The speakers are still in the doors but will be removed once I get around to gutting the rest of the interior. So far I've resisted getting rid of the aircon as being an expat Canadian even after 19 years here I still really feel the heat, though it is turned off during stages it is nice to have on during recce or transport.
Thanks for the tip on the extinguishers I'll swap the mounts around so I can do that. Foot brace for the navigator should be here in the next day or two and in the car in the next week.
Thanks again for the tips they are much appreciated and keep them coming. I am interested in taking the car into dirt events at some stage so any recommendation's of people you might know running VW's I can speak to to pick their brains on prep for offroad would be great.
Cheers Alastair
