UPDATE.
Well...so far so good. Shell interior is stripped, deadner all removed, dash out, aircon out. Loom spilt and all unwanted removed. Goes up for a cage next week.
Suspension is all rebuilt and its a roller. Wow we they are light!!!
Biggest decision is the engine choice..
Stay with the std XU 1.9 and get 80-90kw after spending another grand, plus a LSD + $300 for a gearbox rebuild and have a basic 8v + torque.....$1300
or go to a late model 206 engine and get 130kw, 50 kgs lighter, VVT and a whole heap of newness for $2500...
Its a 87 car so I not sure on the engine exchange under cams or amsag rules, pretty sure not under cams and ok under amsag? Also Targa Tassie can you run a late model exchange engine?
Bearing in mind that its going to be a circuit / targa / Hillclimb and occasional gravel car

No way the EW engine would be lighter than the XU9 8 valve. Also, plenty of hassles getting it work with either the factory or aftermarket ECUs.
Don't forget these late engines have EGR systems (an unwelcome blast from the past!)
On the other hand you would have to spend a lot more than a grand to get 80to 90 kw at the wheels out of an 8 valve. If you are talking at the flywheel as in the 130 for the 206 then the XU9JAz already has this.
MI16 engine is cheapest and easiest solution, heaps of 405 MI16s going for a song.
For the rare occasion it sees the dirt just enter in the new clubman rally car class.
