Dirt cheap to build and run a very competitive Autocross 205 GTi, not decided about the potential as a rally car but will find out shortly unless I change my mind after the Bagshot Rallysprint!
Definitely don't go anywhere near the importers for parts.

Agreed. The only FWD that has ever tempted me since I swore off them forever (Mini K, 1970 Southern Cross Rally).

Yes, but it's whispering "Bonjour, sucker - do you want a good time?" The question is, do you hear "sucker" or "a good time"?
Then again ............

The previous owner clearly left it there, where it stopped. If you had been smarter you would have pushed it further down the street or got Sims metal to pick it up

Are there any decent gearsets and LSDs available for these?

Quaife diffs are readily available, also Tran X.
405 MI16 and 205 GTi ratios can be mixed and matched to produce a very good and inexpensive low/close ratio box.

Quaife is roughly $1500 in aus.
mi16 has a 4.4 ratio and a mix of mi16 and 205 makes a reasonable close ratio box, 1.9 8v has alot of torque in comaprison to alot of Japanese engines so a std Peugeot C/r box seems to work pretty well.
If rules change as per guidelines next year the twin cam engine drops almost straight in (same box and similar block), plus flared guards...
