Sorry for the confusion, 4L60 is the family of gear box. All Commodores have a 4L60 or a 4L60-E Transmission. The E is for electronic. They are a Turbo 700 with a few twists. They are the latest evolution of the old Turbo 350's and Turbo 400 and so on.
4HDD, is more specific about what exactly is in the transmission.
It's like saying you have a 05/99 Commodore VT, instead of just saying you have a Commodore. Actually come to think of it, it would be more like quoting the VIN to GM.
With out the books in front of me couldn't tell you what the letters mean, but I'm pretty sure that the number at the start is the year.
So a 4HDD would be a 1994 and 5HDD would be a 1995 and so on.
If you have a 4HDD then that's what I would be using.
They changed the converter lock up solenoid some time in 94.
Easy way to tell is the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation 95-on) boxes will have 13 pins on the big round plug on the drivers side of the box. and the Non PWM boxes have 12 pins. But if it's out of the car, look behind the converter. It will say "PWM" on the pump if it is the later type.
But the real question is not what you have got now, it's what do you want in it. are you happy with the standard box? (Most people are not) There must be about 1,000 things that can be changed. Some are just common sense, but a lot of it comes down to how do you want it to drive.
I'll PM ya some numbers.
Cheers
Matt
