Congratulations to Stuart Lister and his band of HRA helpers who orchestrated what must have been one of the best Alpines ever. Superb roads (Murrungower has gone to No1 on my best ever list), slick organisation, thoughtful itinerary, top servicing, great atmosphere and extraordinary performances at the pointy end, resulted in an unforgettable experience for all, even for those who DNFd, as did Winton and I.
Curiously I am not as disappointed as I thought I would be, the DNF apparently caused by breaking the replacement diff on the final stage before the Orbost meal break. We did everything we could in the preceding week to find, prepare and fit a replacement diff, but in the event it failed without warning when we were about 20th outright.
Readers of the Alpine Pre-event thread will know that plan A was to take time off Matt (who had been seeded one car ahead) on every stage (after all I had 2.4 litres to his 2 litre!) but he promptly knocked me off by 12 seconds on SS1. He wasn't to know this of course, but immediately gave it back by nosing off in the last metres of SS2. He looked like a retirement on SS3 when we passed him pulled over with the bonnet up because of overheating caused by a split hose, but he quickly recovered; the max time he took on the stage only costing about 2:40; one of the really nice provisions in the Alpine.
Swill and Tort were a real worry as the car behind us, pinching a few seconds off us stage after stage, even the twisty ones, and had us by about 1:30 when the Stanza failed us. About 3km from the start of the final stage of div 2 on Saturday on a straight piece of road in 3rd gear there was a an almighty bang, causing the car to leap momentarily. My first thought was that we had dropped the tailshaft, and shoved the clutch in, but as we slowed there was no place to pull over, so I tentatively let the clutch out and the car accelerated, albeit with some slight grumbling from the rear end. It was 300m before I could pull over, and a quick check underneath did not shed light on the failure, so we moved off. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, gearbox OK, tailshaft OK, must have been an axle, or possibly dropped a tooth of the pinion. We trundled along for 4 more km, pulling over every 2:30 to await the following car, when on a downhill to a creek and without any audible warning of impending calamity, the diff seized solid, locking both back wheels and sending us up a bank. Luckily there was just enough room for following cars to get past, and I am sure a number of them thought we could have moved the car to give them more room. Regrettably it was locked solid, and without a winch, it was going nowhere.
Hours later, after the sweep, Paul Lonergan arrived with the car trailer, and then began the humorous exercise of 3 senior citizens getting the car aboard. Two convenient metal road signs, some grease, a hand winch and much patience, got the reluctant Stanza onto the trailer and it will remain there until I work out the best way to get it off; and ultimately determine the cause of our demise.
Had things otherwise gone smoothly, maybe we could have challenged Swill for 14th, but a top 10 finish was well beyond possibility without much more attack on my part, particularly in the braking areas.
My commiserations go to Matty who really did want a top 20 finish, and fought Fro for it to the last stage, only to beach the car and drop 6 or so spots with the resultant max time. I know he felt the fi FJ20 was a log compared to the turbo engine, but having watched at the last spectator point, HMAS Skyline was still no slouch. For an IT man he can still build a strong motor.
My congratulations go to Swill and Tort on a 1st class performance in the Commorder; both will relish this forever. Also to Fro and Paul, for persisting with gearbox problems, and on this occasion edging Matt.
An enthalling battle took place at the front of the field, and I only know bits of it; Kari's collapsed valve springs, and even more critical alternator failure, Carl's clutch failure, Claude's puncture, Semmen's unknown demise, Wayne Bell's starter collapse, all of which affected the final results. Darryn Snooks/ Matt de Vaux legitimately had their nose in front when night fell and through others' misfortunes inherited the no1 road position from No4 and built themselves a sufficient time buffer through the dust that ultimately sealed their victory, despite the Sunday attacks from behind.
A superb event, which gave satisfaction to everyone. Look forward to 2009.

Some super provisional results are attached, I've emailed the scorer about some obvious errors. (posn column is mine, is stage rank).
WTF is Tams doing booking in to control 3 mins early near the last stage? If its not true that takes the HMAS Skyline to P25.
Results at http://users.tpg.com.au/goodship/results.xls

Fro clearly driving out of his skin on SS11 (the tarmac stage). P13 on that stage, apart from that his best stage rank is 18th on the final stage.
SOmeone buy that boy a Porsche and send us to Targa.

Yeah, I just had a look at the results, and if we'd got the appointed times on Stages 4 and 18, we would have been passed by the following car in stage. I don't remember getting passed in stage at all???

I've got memories that hurt more than that would... like not getting any bloody brandy snaps.
Paulie can verify we weren't passed in stage. I hope.
