Khanacross Day 1
What an awesome day. It was good to get out on the dirt and remove some of the cob webs. Even if I'm not going to Narooma and it wasn't in the Lancer.
As the Lancer didn't make the cut today (having no engine in it didn't help it's cause), the VT Super Taxi got a run. After a bit of work trying to find some 15" rims for it, I managed to get some rally tyres on it (courtesy of Fro. You are a legend!) and it was ready to go.
First stage was nice and easy. I remembered the same one from last year's Fro-Sport efforts. I couldn't work out if it was because I was in a wider car or not, but the gates seem to be much tighter than last year. Sideways through gates wasn't going to work this time around.
I managed to be at the pointy end of the field after the first three stages, which surprised me. I thought having something that was closer to a boat than a rally car wouldn't work in my favour, but obviously the power I had made up for the lack of manouverablilty.
4th stage, and I finally knocked over the first and only flag for the day. Still inside the top 5.
The final stage went horribly wrong for me. But I did manage to keep from WDing. I ended up 4th outright (so close to that trophy) which surprised me more than anyone else. But now that I know I'm not far off the pace, tomorrow will hopefully involve a trophy.
Thanks to Martin, Adrian, Fiona and Smee for the efforts you put in today (and in the lead up to the event). Can't wait for tomorrow.
Jem

I also would like to thank Marty, Adrian, Fiona and Smee for their efforts on Saturday, and Marty in particular for all the work involved in preparing a khanacross/OLT weekend. I had a thoroughly enjoyable day (in spite of losing my temper ) and will definitely be at the next one, hopefully in something with rally tyres

Bede choked, two days in a row.
Saturday - 1st Tim Anderson (?) in the Gti rally car and then the 323 Astina.
2nd - Choke boy.
3rd - can't remember.
I got 11th, with one WD (I think only the top 5 didn't WD at least once).

Equal 1st - Andrew Crowley from Sydney in a Lancer and Jem in his Commodore.

I had a lot of fun! I thought it was going to be a really embarassing day after I WD'd the first 2 runs Strangely enough, I thought proberably my best run was the second one, but I went the wrong way around the centre post. The even stranger thing, was how much fun that event was in a stock '81 323 FWD and how good the car was, it actually handled close to how I would want it..... just a little slower!
After my WD's, Adrian talked me through how to do the 3rd one and not go the wrong way. He was egging me on to go the right way since not many people at all had gone the right way. I did the run and much to my amazement I went the right way and actually had an ok run, then Jem came over on my way to get my little time sheet and said "nice run, you set the time to beat" no-one was more suprised than me at that comment!!! The time got beaten not long after, but it was still good! My day was good after that. I didn't WD the rest of the runs.
I came equal 16th if I remember correctly, which I thought was very good considering my WD'ing effort earlier in the day!
Was lots of fun and I want to do it again.... since I'm to slack to build or buy a real rally car!!!

Thanks
I’m glad those people who competed during the weekend enjoyed themselves. I think we now have about seven ‘new’ National Rally Licencees - which can only be a good thing.
There are a lot of people to thank for making the weekend run smoothly.
Firstly, Fro, for all his help in putting together the event - your input was appreciated. If it wasn’t for Fro, I doubt I would have gotten motivated to run the weekend. Robyn at the CAMS (NSW) office, who was very helpful in organising the event and answered all of my silly questions. To the officials - Fiona, Marc, Neil, Beb and Don for giving up their time to sit out in the dust. Also to members like SMEE, Dougal, Patrick and Robert - who turned up to watch for a while and ended up helping for hours - thanks, you made it easier on me. Jem Varova for turning up early on both days to help me set up - and everyone for helping to pack everything away. Thanks.
A special thanks to Adrian - not only for being a Steward and running the Licence Lecture on the Saturday evening - but for averting the problems which arose the day before the event.
From my point of view the event was a success - we had a number of people pass their OLT’s and Lecture requirements for their licences. It was good to see some of the drivers improve over the weekend, and to see the trophies go to different people. The ‘Young Guns’ certainly took it to the more experienced drivers, with Andrew Crowley, Tim Armstrong and Richard Hellyer (all going for their OLT’s), and taking home the trophies.
We should have given out a ‘sportsmanship award’ on Sunday - this would have been won by Jem Varova. On Saturday Jem missed out on third place (and a trophy) by a mere six seconds. On Sunday afternoon he tied for first place (with Andrew Crowley) - but elected to take the second place trophy, so that Andrew could take home the first place trophy…. It was a great sporting gesture.
The winners: Saturday
1st: Tim Armstrong
2nd: Bede Austin
3rd: Richard Hellyer
1st Lady driver: Jenny Austin
Sunday:
=1st: Andrew Crowley
=1st: Jem Varova
3rd: Sam Austin
1st Lady Driver: Sophia Moody
When is the next one? Maybe mid May…. or maybe late March, as all of the rallies seems to be vanishing…
Thanks again to everyone who helped out.
Marty

I'd just like to re-iterate on what I said on Sunday. Thanks to everyone involved in running the OLT weekend; not only did I learn a lot and have fun, but I also made friends with a wonderful group of people.
Thanks Jem - I feel a bit guilty with the 1st place trophy - I'm sure I had an unfair advantage with the much smaller Lancer. It was inspiring to see just how quick your Commodore was through each test. Who knows what the results would have been if you didn't get that flag, if Bede hadn't got the WD, or if I didn't have to grab reverse after trying too hard on the slalom?
Either way, it was very, very close competition and a top day. I owe you one - next time I'm in Canberra or if we meet after a rally, it's my shout.

I noticed that there are a few photo's up in the " Member Galleries" section of the site, specifically, a couple of the Khanacross from Saturday posted by Adrian.
As an aside, there are also a couple from Rally NZ by Phil and Sophia, to which I'm sure that they'll add some from the khana (I saw them using a camera out there0!
