DNF Rally - Racetech Steel VRC Round 1
Brief event report .....
It rained all Friday .... & drizzled all Saturday
It was wet & slippery (very)
Gavin Mosher was convincingly the fastest 2WD till the Z lunched its rotor button partway through the event (looking at his times, I think he was using the "works spec" gonads - some of his times were INSANE in those conditions !)
We got 9th OR, 1st 2WD, 1st P3 - mission accomplished nothing like getting points on the board early in the season.
Strzelecki Stages in 5 weeks time - can't wait.
Dave

NINTH outright?
You're a sad excuse for a Viking, Hagar. It's not as if you were in a (Volvo) longship. You were in a Corolla SHORTship! It wouldn't have taken a great deal of effort - helping the bloke on the right with the steering oar - to get up into, say 4th?
In a P3 shortship (rather than P2) at that?
Shame! Slay the dogs, hop on the boat, set fire to the lot, and off to Valhalla!
Be sure to tell us when you're sailing off to your next rally - you can count on support from your e-BMSC mates!!

Hey! is that the time? Need to rush off to watch Hornblower!

Gavin had the car dyno'd during the week and said it was not running well up top. Could not pin point the fault.
He obviously found it when it destoyed itself.....

Next round is 5 weeks away - foreigners welcome !! The Strzelecki Stages has GREAT roads ......

Hagar... I used to watch Jack rally back in SA (where I lived til recently) and yes the kid is quick!!!.. The times he used to get out of his old 180BSSS were pretty staggering to say the least.. not to mention the angles he used to drive at...
I was pretty excited when I found out he was getting the ex Ed ex McDonuts VR4 Evo... I knew he'd do pretty well...

Yep, the phrase "drive it like you stole it" comes to mind when I think of Jack in the SSS ......
The last 12 months he really seems to have matured a lot as a driver too .... I think Mike Dale has had a "calming" influence on him. He's not as radical - and is a lot quicker !
Apprently they are looking at ARC rounds this year (till the money runs out, anyway) according to Mike.
btw .... there was another ex-SA car there too - Tom Quill's WRX, now in the hands of Ross Stapleton from Ballarat. It looks a lot prettier now than it did the last time I stepped (crawled) out of it at Palmer in 2001 (...but we won't go there )

certainly does!!... I seem to recall (and I hope correctly) Jack in 1999 at Rally of Adelaide (where Ed rolled with Ali Drower in the silly seat) the 1st time I saw him drive (and when I started attending rallies on a regular basis) Jack coming into a hairpin at a speccy point, crossed up under brakes.. getting off them and exiting the corner on the lock stops, L18 screaming...
hmmmm.... smile on the dial....
Dave... sounds like a big acco ...I wasn't there.. was probably arguing with the ex wife instead... priorities....
Palmer 2002 I was road closuring on the stage that Jim McGough had his off about 1 km down the road.. that wasn't pretty either...

My dad's participation in this event was not without
We gave it one last check over the night before. Everything was OK and we put it on the trailer. On the way down we noticed a small puddle underneath the left front and found that it was the contents of the front brake lines (and hence no front brakes). It turns out someone had overtightened the brake nut and it had cracked in several spots.
My brother managed to get it from the service to the ceremonial start 6km away. Then the mad rush started to find a place open in Morwell (at 11:00 am) that would make us a new brake line. First place said noone in town can, but said try this major brake chain on the highway. They made us one, but when we got it back it turns out they had used the wrong nuts on one end. Went back and got him to replace it. Was so pleased that when we left he locked the door 1/2 hour early. Got it back to the car and it turns out he is not particularly competent when it come to doing flares. Ended up stripping a distribution block because it wouldn't seal. Finally tried Repco and they put us on to another bloke (If you ever need brake lines in Morwell go to Alexander Rd Brakes) who fixed the line (with execeptional flares) and managed to find us a block (which we later worked out was on almost every trailer in the service park). Got the line in, bled and got to the start with only losing a few minutes of late running time.
That said after the dramas before the start the only problem he had for the whole day was clipping a kangaroo (essentially no damage). Finished 23rd, but was happy with how the car was running as we had to make wholesale changes after the last event - he intially had trouble adjusting from the Bendix ultimate pads to the Ferodos, he stopped WAY before the corners. Biggest problem he found was a lack of traction in the first four gears in the wet and getting used to the car again.
All in all an interesting, but fun, day.
Also, congrats again Dave!
