Loved both reports from Swill and Tort which reflect the satisfaction Winton and I experienced in this event 12 months ago. This more traditional style of rallying actively promoted by the Historic Rally Association definitely has a future. The outcome seems to be of lesser signifiance than the overall experience. So buy that '70/80s Volvo, BMW, Mercedes you always hankered for, they cost f..all now, invest in good shocks, transfer your nav gear and lights from your AWD, and enjoy.

YOu're right Graham, the experience is the whole meal with cake for desert, a result the icing on top.
I reckon its a perfect candidate for the $500 challenge. Buy some *****ter no more than 2 weeks before the event, install your lights, nav gear, and Sched R stuff and drive it down and do your worst.

I had the GPS datalogger going occassionally, got most of the stages I think. Open this file in Google Earth: http://home.exetel.com.au/tortfeaser/richriver2008.kmz

In days of yore, these were known as "Friday night off the lot" specials.
Sounds like you've been watching too much Top Gear!

the $500 ****ters might have to be water tested like last night's episode as the route went very close to the Murray.

I didn't know you could open it in Google Maps.
Try this link then to open it in a browser. Zoom around and see my shame.

We are sorry, but we do not have maps at this zoom level for this region.
Try zooming out for a broader look

Bah. I don't know. Just go to http://maps.google.com and put http://users.tpg.com.au/goodship/Ric...Trial_2008.kmz in the search box, then click search.
It'll have a bunch of annoying i points, some of which are starts, others are highest speed or lowest altitude. I haven't edited any of that stuff out. I also haven't labelled the stages yet.

Did you do the challenge? How'd you go? We found them all, but took 32 mins (!) to do 8km.

Gary Hodgkiss (the man in the horrible towelling hat) produces very detailed results.
No, we didn't do the "challenge" - I had a splitting headache & was a bit "over it" (and the bar was calling ! ) Between Cohuna & Barham was actually the closest I have come to being crook in a rally car for over 10 years .... I think I came into the event a bit under-prepared in the sleep department or something. Didn't want to push my luck.

Luckily for you, that via was an information not a passage and then there was an information board on the exit (and not the entry), so you missed nothing!
We actually had 3 other data loggers running in chosen cars. We're looking to utilise this technology in future to help reduce number of officials needed and to help with scoring. The idea is that you would give your data logger to the scorer in the same way as you currently hand over your road card and he thens plugs it into his computer and then presto . . . it works out your scores. He can then also print out a map trace of the route you've taken, overlaid against the route you should have taken!
If you know someone who could write a program to take the raw data from a logger and convert it to usuable scores quickly, please let me know!
Cheers!

Modern technology dovetails with old fashioned rallying, interesting.
Sounds like everyone had a pretty good time, top stuff.

Spoilsport !
Personally, I don't like that idea ..... part of the "art" of navigation is taking an educated punt on vias you may be able to get away with from the wrong direction .... especially when cutting & running !
