Luckily for you, that via was an information not a passage and then there was an information board on the exit (and not the entry), so you missed nothing!
We actually had 3 other data loggers running in chosen cars. We're looking to utilise this technology in future to help reduce number of officials needed and to help with scoring. The idea is that you would give your data logger to the scorer in the same way as you currently hand over your road card and he thens plugs it into his computer and then presto . . . it works out your scores. He can then also print out a map trace of the route you've taken, overlaid against the route you should have taken!
If you know someone who could write a program to take the raw data from a logger and convert it to usuable scores quickly, please let me know!
|
/digs out maps...so we did! Phew, got away with that one. I'd really like to see what others did, I didn't spend enough time in the pub figuring out where we missed stuff. If there are other datalogs about, its usually trivial to convert them to .kml files and point to them in Google Maps.
The technology is certainly maturing quickly. But getting the software sorted to take a log and score from it would take a significant effort. The hardware is pretty cheap - my GPS datalogger is about $120 and can log for about 32 hours at 1Hz on one battery without downloading the data (its just a little matchbox sized thing). It also has a button on top to make a mark in the log. Lots of the loggers have this function - you could hit this when you find an information, say, then scorers could bring up maps of your track with the marks and compare them to a master. Doing it all without humans looking would be tough - the data could vary up to 30m, accuracy goes down in heavily closed over forest, the logger could fail.
They would be a top tool for checking compliance with maximum speed sections or out of bounds areas, but scoring would be a decent challenge right now. They would be much easier to adapt to A-A events and lose the FF and stop controllies.

I updated the .kml file to make it a bit easier to wade through the rubbish. Now at http://users.tpg.com.au/goodship/Ric...Trial_2008.kmz

Looks like you bypassed Sec 2/Via 4 completely ?
If I can work out how to do it, I'll put up our trace .... which reveals the ritual milling-about we performed in the vicinity of Sec 4/Via 1

Via 4 - We got to the end of Martins rd and stopped at the T J for a look. Had to go west and I saw the road junction to the North and thought that was worth a look. It went west so we took it.
The river crossing between V6 & V7 I think we must have gone the same way at Swill and Tort so I have no idea where the religned bridge is. Was this the R7 redirect or the R3??

The R7 .... Swill & Tort went the correct way, but obviously missed picking the realignment.
If you look at the map, just before the creek the mapped road goes about 45deg left, crosses the creek, then goes 45deg right. About halfway between these 2 bends, the "main" road goes right to cross the creek via a ford, then 90deg left to rejoin the mapped road.
The mapped road is still there, but the old wooden bridge is impassable. The R7 board was at the start of the bridge (about 30-40m in along the old road, from memory ?) and was clearly visible if you were looking for the road to continue SW rather than kinking right to go through the ford !
Zoom in on the area in GoogleEarth & it should make sense ....

Yep got it.
Zoom right in on Swill's track and you can see that the red line is the new road and the white is the mapped road.

That's why I want to see the detailed results. I thought I'd only missed the Via 6/7 bridge redirect, but the results have me with 26 points, (2 late, 4 early for previously mentioned reasons, 10 for the bridge that I blame Swill for not seeing , 10 for something I'm not sure of).
Its super easy to get the track up. Pretty much all the software that downloads the data from the GPS converts it to a .kml file that you can open as you've done with mine. If you haven't got any web space to put it up on, email it to me at tortfeaser at gmail.com and I'll host it.
If your GPS software is hopeless, save the track/data as a csv file (the most basic) and get GPSBabel, a freeware converter. http://www.gpsbabel.org/ That will convert it to .kml.

Not sure what else you might have missed in the daylight - your route looks correct. Possibly just missed seeing an information board at a via ? Did you write down the "R8" at Via 9 ? (it classes as an information board).
According to your GPS track, you also missed Via 4 (intersection of Garner Bk & Log Hauler Tk) in the first night section. You were supposed to enter it from the SSW, which meant turning right off Mawson Tk onto Garner Bk, then left into Log Hauler Tk at the via point. You have gone SO across Garner Bk (staying on Mawson Tk), bypassing the via.
I have some webspace with my internet account, but have no idea how to access it I'll email you the file

Marc,
The 10 points you're not sure of are the penalty for missing an information. You seem to have missed the 'S' at the western end of the first loop into Terricks (ie: at the turn hard left on the route chart). You are the only one to have missed that information!
The map trace clearly shows that you travelled to that spot. Maybe you saw it but didn't write it down? The photo shows what you should have seen.

I've hosted Dave and Kim's data at: http://users.tpg.com.au/goodship/Ric...Trial_2008.kmz
(As before, stick that address in the search box for Google Maps).
( You can overlay mine and Dave's files - by saving the search result in My Maps (there's a link), then tick and untick the boxes to display either.)
