2008 BRM Safari Rally
Some pics at http://picasaweb.google.com/tortfeas...BRMSafariRally
Congrats to Peter Taylor/Kim Martin on the win. Onya Jeffreys, some top stage times there, dunno what happened in the last two to lose 4th place.

A disappointing DNF for our VR4 when the FLH hub carrier snapped on an inoccuous bump bringing us to a quick but safe halt halfway through East-West2. Nick Vardos and I consider ourselves very lucky it failed where it did, otherwise had it gone on a downhill righthander, we could have copied Gerry Schofield and rolled down a mountain as he did (reportedly 5 times over) on Hyles. A bit of a shame as we were in great tussle with Russell Winks for 6th outright, just leading him by 3 seconds, and within 40 seconds of both Langdon Patrick and Ian Jeffrey.
The roads were generally fabulous, East West close to perfect, the event a real credit to the LCCC and Tamsey and his volunteers particularly. Great to see the SKDAC crew making the trip up to help out. The event was very much in the tradition of former Safaris with consistency and reliability really paying off.
Congratulations to Peter and Kim on a top class performance, kept honest by the Barrett twins. A measured drive by Sean Herbert/ John Lilleyman in yet another new built Subaru STi was rewarded with a podium position, possibly heralding the lifting of the red mist and a bright future. Commiserations to Michael Nordsvan whose (clearly exciting) off road excursion took him out of contention, and to Carlos Casmiri and Jamie Neale who had to withdraw through ill health when in the top 6. Jayke Skeffington fell foul of Greenhills, neatly inverting the grunter Datsun 1600, but was allowed to run four stages after the regroup with impressive times for a P-plater. Matty T struggled through 3 stages with a failing gearbox, ultimately doing Sugarloaf 1 in 2nd only! A gearbox change paid off with 13th o/r and valuable points.
My heartfelt thanks must go to Kay for servicing on a chilly day, to Nick Vardos for pro job in the silly seat and to Fro and his band of anonymous helpers who finally tracked down the lonely VR4 and manhandled it onto the trailer in the dead of night.

It was a short rally for us.
Having decided on Sunday that we could/should do this one everything was a bit hectic in prep. The car had sat idle for the better part of 3 years and not been rallied since 2003.
A special thanks to Linda for her help in getting doco sorted. Also thanks to everyone who generously offered and/or provided their time to assist William with tips on Navigating. Friday we had a crew as Williams Dad stepped in to help out (thanks Drew). He came with better equipment than I've ever seen before and it was a shame after all his efforts we didn't get to use it all.
So we were off...
About 400m from the start the engine cut out. Thinking the worst I put out the triangles before checking under the bonnet. The coil lead was off. Having fixed that collected the triangles we continued. The engine was making reasonable power over about 4500 but was dead below that. We also discovered very quickly that their was way too much noise in the car to be able to hear the calls. Turning up the intercom just increased the volume of the cacophony. I spun the car and overshot the THR HTS. Then the ignition lead fell out again, this time I taped it in. We pulled out and noticed the car behind had caught up (no point ruining their stage as well so) I pulled over and let them past. The road disappeared in a cloud of dust and without vision or intercom it wasnt long before I spun it again. William was doing a great job shouting and waving his hands in an instructive manner. He got through it really well considering the problems we were suffering. I started to warm up and settle down a bit but after the spec point we were catching dust again and I entered a right hander much quicker than I would of prefered. The cars handling was excellent and I made mental note that the suspension (first time out in anger) was immensly better than I was used to. Then down hill into a TVHL and we bogged down in the soft stuff. The car was clawing its way through then "bang". No drive. Rolled the car back off the road and climbed out - tail shaft goes around but car goes nowhere.
We were out.
The bit we did was excellent and it looked like it was shaping up into a great rally. Thanks to Tamsey and all the officials and helpers for putting it on - a job very well done.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to have a quick chat (or take the pi55 out of my effort ) we had a great time. Looking forward to doing another one soon and (fingers crossed) we might get at least a few stages in.

Car #16
First of all I would like to say thanks to all the officials/volunteers organisers and competitors for a great day.
Pipeline: Love that stage seems to work well with the car, had a few over shoots (the bunting was already down) as the car did not wont to turn in, ended up that it must have been a slow leaking front right that went flat towards the end of the stage but very happy to to be 5th fastest
Bluetts: Not to much happened here had a good run 2nd fastest (holy s88t ) with a bit of fuel we where off to East west always takes me a bit to get in to the stage with a few slippy corners to catch you out.
Back to Hyles got to love them patches of rocks.
Service: noticed that we had a front left bearing on the way out and tried to find the intermittent miss that was going on.
Pierces East: I find that its a stage to stay alive thanks to Ty for slowing us down on that corner, as we may of end up there as well.
Sugarloaf: Had a bit of a go in there as its a stage that always takes a lot of time out of us and maybe had to much of a go because we clipped a grader mound on the out side of a corner and spun us back the other way and knocked the wheel alignment out on one of the many rutt's and ended up 8th on stage
Not to much to report on the next two stages other than just hoping that the wheel bearing was going to last the distance.
Pierces East II: What can I say, it does it to me every time, got caught up in a rut at the double caution turn hard right and smacked the front left in to a dirty big hole if the wheel alignment wasnt out it was now, every bit of throttle input would sent you every way but straight down the road so with a wheel bearing on the way and a car that didnt wont to stay on the road, Sugarloaf became the bring it home stage.
A big thanks goes out to Renee for keeping me on the straight and narrow.
Mark for servicing
Very happy with our results and a thanks to very one for the support
Thanks to Stuart for the extra fuel, it's amazing how much fuel the Mazda goes through when you are pushing a bit faster
Cheers
Ian

Firstly thanks to all the official that braved the coolish condition on Saturday night to allow us to have a run and finish.
Thanks to Simon and Crew for a fun day.
This is only my 3 or 4th time in the nav seat, so appolgises to Simon for the numerous stuff up on my behalf. As per standard Cary/Edwards contract i got 4 correct call in the rally.
As Simon mentioned else where we manage to hit nearly everything in site and get beached, but we got to the end, congrats to Simon on finishing his 1st event in the "little gemini that could"
We even managed to buckle both inside and outside of a SLE alloy and split the inside bead with out it going down.
Comiseration to all that didn't finished.
And see you out there again soon....

BRM Safari Rally 2008
Hi Everyone,
This is my first post ever as I have just registered, I hope the attachments work!
I was on road closure 1 at East West on Saturday and took a few photos, though they are not great it gave me something to do. I hope everyone had a good time and didn't have much damage done to their cars.

Carlos and I both had a bit of a bug and were never at 100%... after Tidbinbilla we pulled the pin- just not enjoying it and finding everything a little difficult.
It appeared to be a well run, casual event- it's a bit of a shame we weren't up for it. Started the event pretty much 3rd fastest... had a moment/spin/stall etc in SS2 and lost a heap of time, I think there were a couple of other respectable times but we both started to slide.
I know I'm gunna get a few people aim up at me about these next comments, but hopefully the more intelligent amongst us will understand why I'm making them. Either way... I don't really care- but this isn't an attack on Tamsey or Simon or Ray Day ie. who were involved. Just food for thought comment.
I found the roadbook very difficult to deliver, lots of calls, very wordy and generally I struggled to simplify it and get the info to the driver he actually needed to hear. I struggled to decipher all that information and deliver it at speed, and I've never had that problem before. I've probably done 30 or more rallies in the ACT in the last 10 or so years and co-driving has never been as hard as it was on the weekend.
Having said that... the roadbook was well written and accurate- I just question the 'everything and anything' style and think co-drivers need to be thrown a bone in this "the roadbook caused me to crash" war of words we seem to be having in the sport at the moment.
Anyway- don't let my ravings detract from what was a good event.

Massive thanks to Tams and the gang LCCC, Top work, great event.
Its a shame that we didn't make it to the end, again.
I still had a great day. Lots of big skids.
I would say the best bit of the day would have been the first few Km of East West. I absolutely loved it!
All the roads where in very good condition for the most part.
The car was good, seemed to be handling well. I have found out the as long as the back end is hanging out there, all is well.
Its a pity to DNF, but you get that.
I broke the accelerator linkage off the manifold. one of the studs that holds the rod, it just seemed to snap off? I would say that the pedal stop on the firewall is not adjusted, or it is bent. I haven't looked yet.
The funniest thing all day was the way we hooked up the accelerator.
The recovery crew rigged up some speaker wire. Tied one end to the linkage at the carb and then down round the sway bar up in front of the strut tower and finally into Damo's hands.
The set up seemed to work well. Damo would work the throttle and I would do the rest. By the time we had to drive it home we had it down pat. Even got a few smooth gear changes. We got a few laughs and strange looks from the RC's and even stranger looks from other people on the road on the way home.
Congratulations to all the winners on the day, and commiserations to all that didn't finish, like me

A massive weekend, and I wasn't even a competitor? What tha??
Started with a rush down to Vic early in the week to see my old man in hospital, then Friday we left Shepp for Canberra. After stopping in Wagga to meet up with Ryan n Hillary we made it to Canberra in the wee hours.
Next morning early rise but some how late arrival at event but still made it.
We did finish control at stages 1, 5, and 9 and it was a lot of fun to be on the other side of rallying, but bloody cold at night.
On our way back to Canberra after stage 9, and almost there we got the call that Ryan and Russ had rolled off the road and was out, so back around we went to help recover. After about half hour of waiting at the finish of the last stage we were let in to find thay had rolled about 25m off the road and the recovery guys were hard at it with all the gear. Top points to their professional conduct
At about 12amish we were loaded up and on our way back. Unfortunately on the way back we copped a stone on the window following the trailer and now the Evo has a huge crack over the drivers side Lucky I know a dude that works at Wagga Novis glass repair that need a new roof on his Satria
