Yep!!!!!! Car started to loose power and seriously over heat, then started to blow blue smoke and we lost oil pressure. Pulled over quickly, worked out it didn't have any water in it but there was no sign of water going anywhere. We poured our drink bottle into it and then we heard the water bubbling in the engine!!! So it appear to have blown the head gasket. No idea how that happen having done about 30 competitive ks and 700 in total, so I will be making a phone call on Tuesday with a please explain!!!!!! To say I am not happy is a massive understatement!!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Bega - well two thumbs up for getting there with Lizzy driving...... I only had to shout once going down the Brown Mountain - stating that I didn't want to die a fast Datsun virgin!! Although for the passenger in the white Transit van in front of us, it may well have been Brown Pants mountain
The Clio Sport is a ridiculous car, how anyone, let alone Lizzy manages to keep their license is beyond me... anyhoo..

Got to the RSL to discover that both 2WD's ahead of us had withdrawn (I later found out after having a chat with Jeff David at the presso that their car hadn't arrived from NZ in time, which is probably why Snooks was a DNS too). So we were 1st 2WD - a position we wanted to maintain

I was a little aprehensive about a 45km first stage, but at the finish, I wanted to line up and do it all again - seemed to be all over in a flash and I was really disappointed to see those red boards. In fact I couldn't speak at the end of the stage I can only imagine what the car sounded like from the outside while Carl was wringing it's neck - bloody awesome*!! On a couple of the long calls I shut my eyes and just enjoyed the ride Set a pretty good time - were probably about a minute ahead of the other 2WD's which was cool.

SS2&3 were again nice and flowing. We were going really well despite the brake pedal sometimes going to the floor (glad I didn't notice that) and find out that we're 6th o/r after the first 3 stages. Sweet!

On SS4, the repeat of the first stage, it's wetter and greasier than before thanks to a flash storm that came through. We knew our time would be slower than SS1 as we struggled for grip in a few spots. We get a flat with about 12/13kms to go - we decide to change it. One car came past us, so we knew we had done alright with the tyre change. Thought we'd lost 2-3 minutes.
We had about 2:30 lead on the next 2WD, and wondered if this would be enough to keep us in front. I go look at the scoreboard to discover that we're about a minute behind. Buggar!!
So we have 13kms to make up 1 minute...... red mist descends great stage - simply couldn't have done it any faster..... 10:14... we got 44 seconds back, which just wasn't enough and we end up 2nd 2WD (I think) by about 15 seconds. Drats!!

I'm still grinning though, so a fantastic weekend

Some things that I learned at Bega:

* Carl is awesome - I now fully understand the term 'steering with the rear'
* Flat tyres suck wang
* Clod has no luck
* Lizzy is a bed hog

Thanks to all those that made the event possible - I can't remember a more relaxed and laid back Bega.

Thanks to our service crew - Lobby and Michelle, Travis and Simone, Bob Bridge and of course Michelle and the boys!

Thanks to Carl for the seat and opening my eyes to what a fast Datsun can do in the forest - blown away buddy - had an absolute blast!

Thanks to my Mum for taking care of Thomas for the weekend so I could compete, and to Nathan for his support and front tyres

*Please tell me someone had a video camera and got aome footage of car 20?!

Even without shire roads Bega (Eden) is gold! (when they’re dry)

I’m still on the high from those predictable flowing roads, cruising along in 4th gear with the song of 5krpm playing in the back ground.

The rhythm was soon lost in stage 2 when the car was pushing its self out of over steers and torque steering down the road. With the grinding noises coming from the rear wheels as they were rubbing on the guards I convinced myself I had bent the panard rod again. At the end of stage as I looked in the side mirror only to be surprised to see the rear wheels trying to escape from under the car, no wonder the car was dancing down the road! Between stages I tied up the broken panard rod with the fan belt, tie down strap, tyre lever and many cable ties so we could limped through stage 3.

Being an adjustable panard rod the nut for the adjustment had broken away from the rod. Thanks to the Nutter’s team who welded it back together.

Stage 4 with its general caution of slippery started with 20 plus k’s of gold and I was wondering why did they bother with the caution or how crap could the coarse car driver had been. But then it turned to crap and I ate my words as the light grey surface didn’t give any clues to the grip levels and all confidence was lost as many corners were almost impassable. The mud was made worse by the fact that the roads had such a nice flow you ended up approaching them way too fast. I struggled to keep the car on the road and had memories of waiting in the rain after going off in Narooma in similar conditions. At the end of the event I found that we made some ground back in the results which really meant the reason I struggled so much was the fact we were going too quick for the conditions.

Congratulations to Dave Boyd who is shaking up the silver cup series with another win. We managed to hold onto 2nd as Dave Stephens played the caution card in the mud.

Thanks to Rob for Naving again and the crew for keeping the car going.

I think series wise, Fro still won the NSW event because Mick/Harv aren't registered for the series this year.

(Mick, feel free to correct me if I've mixed this up somehow...)

My Bega photos have been uploaded to Flickr. Sorry, there are duplicated files (I will fix this over next few days).

Find them here... Bega Rally 2009 - a set on Flickr

Usual deal... help yourself to free pics. Larger files are available under the "all sizes" button.

Can someone post a link on the Victorian e-group so our friends have something to browse while stuck at home in hog flu quarantine?

Enjoy!!!

Snippets from the service park.

Claude and Lizzie in the WRX reported they dropped about 1:30 in SS1 when they stopped to investigate a non existent flat tyre. They soldiered on rather tentatively with the car behaving perfectly on rh bends, and snap oversteer on left (or the other way round). At service discovered they had soft compounds on the front and also left rear, and a hard on the right rear. Changing to hard fronts and soft rears at least made it predictable.

Luke Anderson reported that part way into SS1 the nuts securing the VR4's dump pipe to the exhaust undid themselves (?) blasting hot gas onto the clutch slave cylinder, cooking it. He continued with clutchless shifts, but pulled the eye off a shift cable, resulting in about a 14 minute time loss. After the problem was fixed at service, he flew. Without that misadventure, he could well have threatened the podium.
