Oran Park last ever open trackday event report
Well I had fun, surprised myself (and a few others I think ), I'm happy with my 1:37 time, although I reckon there was another few secs left in it. If only the brakes had been working properly the whole day...
On that note, apologies to those that I might have held up when the bloody things faded. They ended up back to the metal (there was literally no pad material left!) and of course they had to die at the end of the main straight - the pedal went to the floor at a tad under 100mph... That was interesting!
All was good after I got new pads and came back though, all signs of brake fade were gone and I could really get into it.
So, how did everyone else go?

Fun fun fun
Oh my goodness!
How much fun was that!!!!
For those who were not there they split us up into 4 groups, Fast, sorta fast, Reasonable and SOFT (or cars pre 1980)!
Being in the Cr@pella with 62 rwhp and 2nd hand 185 75 R14 tyres, Soft was the order of the day and I thought I did well to hold my own. A few off-track excursions (as the yet to be edited in-car will attest to) but after a little tuition and practise pulled a 1.38.1 out of the clacker! STOKED!!!
Was really happy in the last session where I was keeping pace with an r33 gts that would pull out 3-4 sec on the straight (capella toped out at 150kph @5600rpm) and I would pull in in through the corners. I was loving turn 1 by the end of the day. Dab the brakes and turn in and back on the power before te apex and then pray the car settled enough to brake for turn 2!!!
Was that you in the EH Jonno? Sorry I didn't say hi!
Thanks to Mick, Boz and all the boys for a GREAT day!!!!!

I had a great time- thanks to Boz, Mick, and the crew for putting the day together.
I was in the nuffie group with imortl, and ran a 1:35.4 in the VT with stock road tyres, auto, an open diff, and a massive misfire, When it's not misfiring it's got plenty of grunt- was lifting off at 160 and coasting through the kink, then on the brakes, only really braked 3 times/lap - turn 2, turn 3, and the final turn.
there was some cool stuff out there.. a full set of modern GTRs R35, R34 Nur, R33, and R32, a 911 GT3 CS, an elise, an early 911, a pretty phat RX-3 tarmac rally car, a heap of EVOs and my favourite- an E34 M5 wagon (not genuine- but as close as you can get- built from a M5 sedan and an E34 525 with complete driveline and interior swap). Had a ball tailing this dude for at least 2 sessions.
Discovered cool down drives are essential in the VT at the moment, so I went and cooled the car down by doing burnouts on the skid pan along with the dude in the M5 wagon
Kohler had the datto wound up and did a very very low 1:27

Yep, that was me. I should have come and said hi too, sorry! I was too busy trying to sort out those bloody brakes...
When I got them working in the final two runs I was lifting off at the end of the pit wall, the speedo was just off the clock (a bit under 110mph, I think around 170-175kph ), give the brakes a light dab just before I turned into the kink then accelerating again before the hairpin. I'd like to know what it would have done with semi slicks, I was barely touching the brakes there as is...
There were a lot of cars I was able to pull away from around the rest of the track, especially through the dogleg and into the last corner, I made up a lot of time not lifting at all until I was on the uphill into the last corner. Had a good little fight with the old CRX, I'd blow his doors off down the straight and he'd catch me around the corners, I let him go past though as I was holding him up. I chased the blue WRX around for a lap or two until we got to the straight again, same thing with the VL turbo, although I caught the VL by the dogleg for a few laps.
Not too bad for a 46yo car with $100 radials, open diff and wonky front alignment...

How good did these 3 sound! The 911 GT3 was the pick for sound, the R35 the pick for coolest though - I couldn't get over the brakes, 6 piston rears and god knows how many on the front, they were HUGE.
I didn't mind the little orange Torana either, but I may be biased there...
I don't think the old red 911 was pushing too hard either, I almost overtook him down the straight, I think he thought his Porsche had to be faster through the corners, he didn't let me past - but 2 corners later he had dissappeared from my rear view mirror...

We asked and they will send out an email to everybody who was there with the guy's email, so no need to worry.
Again a big thanks to Mick, Boz and everyone else who ran the day.

Matt took 3635 photos. I expect that may take some sorting, but it will be worth it. Dont Rush him.
I will be posting details for the laptimes and photos etc soon.
It was a fantastic day, exceeding all the hype.
There was a bit of a rally flavour, with Rhianon available to talk co-driving, and Steve Glenney insructing all day, and Hotlaps with Jack and Dash.
I made a special effort to have all the extras missing from some of these types of days, 2 mechanics, lots of insructors, 105 fuel , lunch, towing, medical, Photography, even coffee.
Very happy to have invited Barry Smith who was the top gun from session one.. In Fact there was a very 'rally' heavy top ten.
Interesting to note, that fastest driver/car combo on the day took advantage of our Instructors, Barry happy to admit you can still teach an old dog new tricks! I predicted in the briefing the fastest guys are happy for advice, then the next group somtimes know better themselves!
My 13 year old was driving that Blue WRX Johhno, we snuck him out with Ian Dyk in 2 sessions in the arvo, when peoples mechanical breakages created a couple of sopts. It made his '2010' to make that passing move on the bridge. He tells me the speed limiter happens at 180!

Wow, I didn't expect that! There's no way I would have driven like that when I was 13... He can certainly steer considering his age!
It's good stuff that you guys for let him have a run, and congrats to him for driving so cleanly. Hopefully he'll be one to watch over the coming years.

Reading this thread just made me more pi55ed off that I couldn't make it!
Would've been awesome to give the XR5 a blast around there!
