I think you've hit it on the head there John, the sport has evolved, for better or worse; personally, I think a bit of both. And the cars have evolved too (again, a bit better and worse, I reckon.) I think back to the LA Lancer I ran in the early 80's and it would have gone up and over the bank and through the water with ease. Short wheelbase, no overhangs, and 10~12" of clearance under the middle of the sumpguard.
Even the top speed of the Lancer was only about 20k/h slower than the GT4; it's just that the GT4 gets there in 1/2 the time.
I look at the pics of your Silvia (nice ones, heh) and I'm sure it's lower and has at least as much overhang as my GT4, yet I've watched you (or was it Wayne) go through the water with ease, even if a bit muddy.
And here I sit with a grader blade for a sumpguard. I'm still very, very confused

The only problem with the water splash was the Approach Angle. That caused the sump guard and front of the cars to act like a shovel instead of a skid plate. If we had used it the other direction I think you would find most cars would not have had a problem the sump guard would act as a skid.
Sump guard design as to where it deflects water (Into the engine bay , out to the sides or under the car) is often overlooked. You can see in the vid that the Silvia's guard and frontal shape of the car (Low profile) directed most of the water high and over the roof and I may add through the roof vents :-)
Cheers

Wait back up a moment....
Bill did you say there is going to be a circuit built? Is this a done deal because we are dying for another circuit - please keep us informed!

Yes a new circuit at Ringwood is all but a done deal. MGCCN are selling the whole 300 acre site (including the hillclimb), to Italia Road Holdings - who have a website now. It will be 3.0km long and rise over twice the height of the existing hillclimb, with inner links so it can be multi used. The multi millionaire petrol head behind it is determined to make it a circuit with the best facilities in Oz, having toured all the other tracks to assess this. I have official drawings of the design but they are confidential at this stage to our committee.
The previous development proposal by Motorplex failed because a drag racing strip was the centrepiece and the feared noise levels got all the NIMBY's opposed and vocal. The council told us then if it had no strip it would get through, plus the faces there and our approach have changed after council elections altered the balance of power. At this stage most of them appear on side. Will keep you posted.
And yes, the "Muscle Hatch" I am currently converting my dirt Civic rally car into will go very nicely on tar as well. Ask me no questions & I'll tell you no lies.... but it's never been done in Oz before!

Oh now that's bloody awesome. I can handle losing dirt for a full race track. And so can many hundreds of tarmac guys - this is great news!

Hey is it really you, Kingy???

Sorry I don't remember that spot. I think I have a trophy here somewhere for the Yokohama 400 I can remember winning a New Set of Tyre's or something like that.
That is a good example of a sump guard doing what it is supposed to do.
Cheers

More thread hijackage....
That would be Shallow Crossing. And the kingy on this thread is none other than John King's son Steve, g'day Dipstick
Ah, the old Yokohama Radial 400…. Remember it well (well, at least bits of it). IIRC it was 1979 and the presentation was at Ryde somewhere. I was running zero and I think Howard Croswell was the COC (or Director as it was called then).
It may have been that year or a year later the route went down Wills Fire Road (which I think was off the Sheep Track) over a creek crossing and we stuck our zero car in the creek as it was deep and rocky (Bill P would have loved it). A certain gemini was first on the road and we flagged it down - before all these fancy comms of course - we jumped in the back of the gemini and the charming fellow in the drivers seat took us back to the start control. As they were 10 minutes in front of car 2 and control was only a couple of k's up the road (and of course it was at night because it was a real rally) we got back to control unscathed and canned the stage just as car 2 was pulling in. It was a good ride back then too, Belly, even if it was a bit squeazy
We never used Wills Fire Road again...
So many stories. What about the time....

Just a minute. Out with the WD40 quick spray in the left ear hole (trying to get those memory cogs turning again.) Shine torch in right ear hole to project what is in there onto the wall. Nothing ???? Wait a minute I see the problem a couple of broken teeth on the gears, another squirt of WD40 they begin to turn.
Yes I can just remember picking you guys up and taking you back to the start control, you were wrapped around the roll cage I think. Knowing me I probably did not go all that slow on the way back either. Amassing what can jog your memory, in my case WD40.
