Redmist Rallysprint MG car club Newcastle
Just a few from a very dusty and hot Ringwood park rallysprint today put on by the MG car club Newcastle. Only had 11 entrants unfortunately but those who were there all had a good go.

lots of fresh blood out there today trying to make the day work, first time for many.
highlights for me (prob not for R Troup - GT4 rally on forum I think) was how much air you can get in a GT4- it landed hard but still managed to finish the day. W Bell, how good was this guy to watch.
Vale/Vale corolla sounded good all day gotta love a 4age revving hard

air-time in the gt4
Great day - well organised.
I think we may have hit the jump a little too fast on my first run after almost 12 months out of the GT4. I saw the jump & didn't count on the accelleration that the car has. Then there was a windscreen full of sky followed by a windcreen full of ground - and a very hard hit. To make it worse there was a guy videoing the whole thing!
How smooth & Fast was Wayne Bell? he was awesome to watch.

Even better to sit next to.... The silvia was running about half power all day courtesy of the water splash on the first run, but Wayne still managed to win the event. Sitting next to him was the best driving lesson ever. He transformed the silvia into a weapon and gave me much food for thought on how to pedal the thing. backing it into the corners and his control over throttle and wheel were simply awesome. I sat next to him on his third last run and it was a ripper, with Belly saying he pulled a good one and might not fluke it again. My son Andrew sat in on his last two runs and he pulled times 7 seconds and 11 seconds faster than the "flukey" run! Andrew was impressed.
Thanks for the lesson Wayne, you're a true champion.
Evan Vale had a great run for 2nd outright, and pulled times even quicker than Wayne for the three reverse runs, in a FWD rolla - very tidy.
Thanks MGCC for an entertaining day. There were more officials than competitors, which was a bit of a disappointment, but you guys worked your butts off and it's much appreciated.

Thanks to Greg, Bill, Gregor and their team of helpers. The day was well run; facilities and catering excellent.
The only blemish from my view was tearing the sumpguard off the car in the third pass over the levi bank and through the puddle. I thought walking pace was slow enough, but I guess not. I have to tell you, driving the last two laps with no sumpguard, even at granny pace, was pretty nerve wracking
Congratulations to Wayne and Evan on managing to keep double entered cars intact and circulating at pace all day. Well done
Cheers,
Leigh

Well this was the first Dirt event run by the MG Car Club for over 15 years. They would have to be disappointed at only 11 entries. However the organisers did a great job on the day and we the competitors had some fun.
I was not sorry they removed the infamous jump and IMOP should not have been there in the first place. However the Track has some potential for future events and with further work on the surface it could become a popular destination for rally sprint people.
Thank you to John for the drive in his Nissan. I had a great day and I am pleased you got something out of riding with me. The car has potential and was quite fun to drive despite lacking power for most of the day. In fact that may have been a good thing as I was able to use full throttle everywhere without worrying about the Turbo coming on to song in the middle of a corner.
Thanks again to all concerned I hope Ringwood really kicks on.
Cheers

MGCCN has been running khanacrosses at "Rockwood" for the last nine years. We hosted a State k/x round last year and have two to run this year. It was however the first Rallysprint we've run in 19 years - hence the completely new crew. Over the last three years all the k/x tracks I restored and new links I put in had one intent in mind ... to one day run a rallysprint there.
Apart from one of the new "Come & Try" Rallysprints in April (2S lisc. only, no log book or cage), there will be NO more rallysprints at Ringwood because the acreage has been sold to a developer who's gonna put in a 3.0km tar circuit bigger and better than Oran Park. He hopes to open in 2011 and get his bulldozers on site after August this year. Sadly the tiny field we (and others last year) are getting at State rallysprints will not encourage our club to look for a new dirt venue, despite the urgings of dust addicts like myself.
Without having a go at anyone I need to say how suprised I was at the trouble so many had with just 30cm or less of water. You can hear just about every car misfiring coming out of the splash in the video. We advised everyone well before race day that the water would be there and that they should prepare their cars accordingly - but no-one seems to have taken the short time required to waterproof their ignitions. This was something we considered fairly basic prep years ago when I was rallying, just requiring some tubing, Silastic, and attention to air induction. Fifteen minutes tops.
I also stood in the fog and photographed rallies years ago that went in and out of flooded creeks at night. Their Oscars went UNDER the water! One navigator climbed out his window, walked over the bonnet and stood on the bumper just above the water level, lifted the bonnet and sprayed WD40, climbed back with dry feet, and off they went again. Have we perhaps gone a little soft?

That is sad news I thought the site had huge potential and was hoping to work with The MGCC and people such as yourself to develop the track much like the old Nelsons Plains Dirt circuit, that use to be heaps of fun.
Now we watch with interest as all the Bull starts over a racing circuit development proposal. I do wish them every success.
Cheers

Bill the sad fact is YES we have all gone soft. Call it progress if you like but rallies and a lot of rally cars are not the same as they were 20 or 30 years ago. They are now very much forest races/racers. If there was only a few inches of water in the splash it probably would have been OK. In our case the air cleaner got coated with a layer of muddy water (and the whole inside of the car courtesy of the roof vents....) and without a spare we just had to accept the lack of power for the rest of the event. Might have been a good thing - Belly scared the crap outta me enough anyway *
Also sorry to hear the track is to be replaced - on the whole it was quite fun and technical and a good exercise in car control.
Love your photo, looks like the GT4 was fired from a cannon
*not really, in fact it's a bit of a turn-on watching someone else do it to your car
