What a rally in the first 4 stages which is all we completed due to diff upper control arms being torn loose. I decided to give Bega a real go. Glendale started well and I found the rhythm quickly. I stuffed up the speccie point were a scando went wrong ending up facing the spectators for too long. We came in with a time of 4.44, that’s 10 seconds quicker than last year, yippee.
Stage two stated well with lots of rhythm and corner speed but there were lots of corners were the road was breaking up into what looked like loose soil and the rhythm was lost with big skids. We came in with a time of 6.21, slower than last year but we were still up there with the best of them. Those freshly graded roads were not as much fun.
Stage 3 Had a great go apart from almost going off after seeing Darren in the gutter.
Stage 4, The great go was lost to thick dust in the gully and being slowed for a crashed 1600 around a blind corner. The later part of the stage felt very fast.
Stage 5 started strong but we out drove the upper control arms of the diff as there were worn clean off on both sides. Limped to service but ran out of late time.
At the end of the day I was blown away to see where we were placed with as we were 32nd, that’s up there with all the ACT gold cup competitors.
I would love to see how much quicker we could be with new tread as we were running some second hand Kumo. Compared to other tyres I have tried these Kumo R800 tyres are amazing.
Thanks to Mat for holding it together as I stepped up the pace and all the guys who help in repairing the diff.

Yeah...that'd be enough to put anyone off.
So...big Saturday night DK? Still in the gutter on Sunday morning...

And I take my "off the pace" comments about myself back. We were still miles off King/Semmens/South (as was expected), but were a lot more on the pace than I have been - Ewing is well within sight, and even Waterhouse isn't out of reach (yet! Give him another couple of events, and we'll see what happens....).
Happy(er) now.

No Matt please - I spent the last 12 months trying to convince people that it was Cobalt Blue . Looking forward to seeing it out there in action again soon.
Hi Dave - yes another lurker here... another distraction from work!
Karl, thanks for your kind words. We had a great time in rally heaven and will definately be back for more. Our seeding is a result of building up the team over the last 18 months or so that included a couple of poor results at the start of last year... in fact Bega was probably our turning point 12 months ago. Justin's driving has improved rapidly in that time and he really didn't put a wheel wrong on Sunday - he also gave Snake Track the respect it deserves!
Cheers again to all the non-mexicans who made us welcome.
Getting nervous waiting for these results though...
Cheers, Matt

Matt, they're up - go to the forum index page, and find the Front Page News forum.
You have nothing to stress about!

After some further examination, I'm not as unhappy as I was with my result.
I finished, which has to be a bonus after my spode-like effort at Narooma.
On further examination, I wasn't that far off the pace that I wanted, but as expected, did better on the shire stages than the forestry stuff. Although, not for want of trying, the mechanical dramas we had definitely didn't help.
I'm bucking up. It wasn't that bad. I'll see if I can improve a little, and additional work on the car between now, Dell, and then Caltex should be interesting.

Thank God for that! The moping was a bit painful.
I reckon SS6 was our best effort. I loved that stage. Matty T pulled out the big ones for the final stage though - top work.

A few other thoughts:
*Richard and Rob - whoa! Or, more succinctly put: F12k me!!! Nice work chappies.
*Nobody seeded behind me beat me - except the freaks in car #72...
This, combined with my ordinary time for SS7 (which was definitely one of my better drives in the rally) suggest that the timing of the day-light to no-light transition hurt us.
*Semmens got hammered by King, and was geniunely threatened by JW (remembering it was JW's first event in a pretty basic spec car). Did he have a good event, or were there dramas?
*That spin on SS2 killed us for the shire stages... Looks like it cost us 10~15 seconds which is usually insignificant (and at the end of the day, it pretty well was), but it dropped us miles down.
*I have always been a slow starter... But having a look at comparative stage times from this year, I'm begininning to think that the opposite is true.
*I said at the start, that I'd be happy if I was anywhere near Carl Stewart... after two hours of driving, we both had exactly the same stage times, and exactly the same penalty times... I guess you can call that close... Now I've just got to pretend that he never had car problems (coil not working above 5,000rpm on the shire stages, after the coil lead fell out on SS1...).
Edit: Tim Dog on SS1!? WTF??? 3rd 2wD? I don't think so Tim!

Nahh, I'm still gonna mope. Just 'cause our results were better than I'd hoped, doesn't mean I didn't drive in crap-tacular fashion. And teh times drop off significantly after the exhaust fell off (SS7 and beyond). Seems the lack of low-down torque hurt, particularly with the attempt to stay a gear higher than normal.
Bahhhh. Humbug.
