Olde BP Rally Tasmania 2006
Supp regs for this year's "big one" from the HRA are now available for download from the club's website.
http://www.hra.org.au/comingEvents/2...ldeBPRally.asp
If you want to do a really fun event, the "Olde BP" is one not to miss .... a true 60s-type rally, run under TRE rules.

Trying to sort out some local servicing options for the Olde BP in Tassie. .... to save costs.
Is there a Tasmanian eGroup or similar ? Thought maybe could organise some locals ..... or are there any Taswegians on here ?

Dave,
Hopefully Nathan sorted you out, but if you want to get in touch with someone down here, there's a tasrallying yahoo group, but you could also go to www.500carclub.com.au and use the links to send an email to the newsletter editor.
I heard about a couple of planned entries for Ye-old on the weekend. Thought about it myself, as we really enjoy the navigational stuff but my Nav and I get sick of it at about 3:00am in the morning.

yes I remember the Experts Trial I did about 12 years ago. We were only getting warmed up at 3am. Come to think of it last year's Nghtstalker we started the second to last section just before 2.00 am. shheesh!
I'd better put a pillow in the car for long transports...Dave you drive!

That's what happens when you spend half the night lost

Any results available from Ye Olde? I've had a look at the HRA website but no luck there.
Interested to see how the local guys went and knowing how we used to compare to some of the crews, seeing how tough the navigation was.
I spoke to one of the crews from down here. They pulled out at Scotsdale after 15 hours of competition with Driver fatigue. That's the reason why I turned down the sweep job too. Damn I can't believe I did that.

Final results for the Olde BP Tasmania could be a while as scorer Gary Hodgkiss is now highly preoccupied with the Rally of Melbourne.
Unofficial results saw the usual suspects at the head of the field, as expected, but with a twist or two.
Winners appear to be Alan Upton & Mark Laidlay, who are in red hot form at the moment. A formidale and long-standing pairing who have been successful in a variety of cars for many years, they seem to be unbeatable since getting into a well-sorted Datsun 1600.
The twist is that they upstaged Terry Naish & Ross Runnalls! These guys only dropped about 5 minutes in time penalaties but seem to have come unstuck through inattentiveness on a couple of the 'transports', missing 2 vias (worth 30 points each) and ending 19 points behind the winners!
Third & fourth places are undecided at the moment. Initially it looked like third would go to Graham Wallis & Phil Nicholas but David & Kate Officer may tip them out once all the cards are checked for missing vias.
Fifth and sixth were filled by the two Volvos of Ian Swan/Matt De Vaux (2nd in the last Olde BP) and Stephen Coutts-Smith/Steuart Snooks. These crews had a good battle for position throughout the event, until the latter got stuck for a while on a steep downhill fire trail in the 5th and final division!
Of the 25 crews entered, 3 missed the start - two of them arriving at Station Pier in Melbourne to see the Tasmania-bound Ferry disappearing towards the horizon!
It was great to be back in amongst the pine forests. The roads were almost all excellent (no dust whatsoever), the navigation challenging and the endurance very demanding.
As for the Tasmanians, best were Darren Clarke & Tim Gadsby in the MAzda RX3 who finished 8th. Other Tassies crews took out 11th, 14th and a DNF.
And as for Dave trees . . . well I'll let him tell you about his unfortunate DNF.

The Dr. & I snotted the end of a log with the LHF wheel about 3:30am Sunday and busted a tierod end We were on the wrong length of mapped disused railway line at the time
The event was damn hard work, but there really are some awesome roads over there.
It was pretty relentless ..... they were giving us the route instructions for each 200-odd km Division somewhere between 40 & 10 minutes before each one started. We had a couple of crap Divisions (nav with failing eyes trying to decipher the map) and a couple of good ones.
Roll on the next one (in Eastern Vic) in 2008 .....

Thanks for the update Snooksie.
I'll have to catchup with the Tassie crews and see if we can rustle up some support for a short (ie < 8 hour) navigational TRE down here, like the old days.
Bad Luck DaveTrees. I assume you didn't have any trouble getting repaired and back on the boat.

Fortunately we were only about 500m off the bitumen, the service crew was only about 10km away, and we had phone coverage ....
Flat towed the car 15km back into Scottsdale (I'll let Geoff describe that experience - I was asleep in the front of the service barge ) then parked up in the forecourt of the BP servo there until they opened.
The guy at the servo was a legend - gave us the run of the workshop, and organised a friend to come down & pick up the busted parts & take them away & mig them & deliver them back. Got the car drivable to get it back to Devonport & onto the boat.
He also gave a crew who had blown a motor Saturday night a bed at his place ..... as I said - a genuine Aussie Legend !

YES that was an interesting drive back to Scottsdale. Tried just to drive the Galant with one wheel flapping ( Hey if they can do it in the WRC...?)
but that just meant that everytime I got to a slightly cambered corner the car would head for the ditch. I'd then have to get out and kick the tyre straight so I could drive along the road. Of course it was raining and the service crew sat watching me do this a couple of times from the nice warm 4WD. So after struggling through 2km hooked it up to the Jackeroo and let them tow the car and then all I had to do was keep on full right lock which occassionally caused the car to dive onto the wrong side of the road! Not much traffic at 4am luckily.
Anyway list of damage was; busted inner tie rod end. twisted cross member, and two badly scrubbed tyres.
I'll let Dave tell you about the misbehaving Terratrip which added to his woes. It was reading 06.08 for 00.00 as the display slowly disintegrated.
Geoff
PS: top bloke at the Scottsdale BP - Tubby I think he was called. Had two great Cortinas in the service bay. A GT500 replica and a Mk2 Lotus. And his wife who offered us all free coffee. i think he said we all bought about 1500 litres of fuel over the rally.
How did the excort get back to the Big Island???

Oh yeah .... that was real fun in a tight navigation event ... not !! Managed to operate off the Cumulative display OK most of the time - I had got pretty good at estimating the 3 sec delay on the zero button by the time we DNFed ...

John Rawson & the boys flat towed it from Scottsdale to Devonport & onto the boat Monday arvo (after a few of us had a long leisurely breakfast by the Launceston waterfront and they dropped me off at the airport ....)
