Race to Dakar 8:30pm ABC tonight
Just a note to say there is a special on Dakar tonight FYI. Extract from ABC site:
Race To Dakar
8:30pm Thursday, 30 Nov 2006
Following the global success of Long Way Round starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, Race To Dakar sees Charley attempt to fulfil his childhood dream and take on the most dangerous race in the world - the Paris-Dakar Rally.
First Charley selects his team and custom-builds their motorcycles. We follow him through the highs and lows of the intense training, and his shock as he receives the news that he is totally unfit for the journey, just as the final preparations are being made for departure. Finally, the Dakar Team - which includes fellow competitors Matt Hall and Australian-born Simon Pavey - set off for Senegal to embark on their 16-day epic motorcycle adventure.
Every set-back, from the support vehicle's regular break-downs, to Charley falling and breaking both his hands is recorded on film. Riding a further 140km with broken hands, Charley reluctantly gives up his dream and leaves the race exhausted and wrecked. All his faith is left in the hands of the two remaining riders, but several days later an utterly exhausted Matt is forced to give up, beaten by the harsh terrain of the Sahara desert. Matt is then left stranded for more than 24 hours without food or water whilst rescue teams battle with higher priority cases.

I have just gotten "Long Way Round" for Ethan for Chrissy. It comes as a DVD and a book and as a special deal, I got the 2006 Dakar DVD included. I guess we will have our eyes glued on the ABC tonight once Ethan sees this post!!!

The guys in the VMX forums are calling it "The Race Halfway to Dakar"...
Wonder if they deal with Andy Caldecott's death?

I thought it was pretty ordinary really - throw lots of money at people who know what they are doing and act like a spoilt brat when they tell you how to do it properly.
JMO though.

I thought the same thing... "We're tolerating him because he's paying the bills"... I'd put up with a lot of ***** from someone who was paying for my Dakar campaign...

Was the same as Long Way. Useless dudes have a good idea then stuff it up by trying to make a TV show. WTF is with carting support cars, camera cars etc etc on an adventure round the world on bikes?
Just made me angry that Boorman whinges about being crap, yet doesn't do anything about it except whinge.
And why do you want to watch arguments about camera placement? Its of no interest. For all that, there was no footage of the bloke falling off and getting hte bruises/breaks.

I found it to pretty interesting.......I thought the enduro events that he attempted to do look like fun and I couldn't care less if the dude could ride or not. It was better than the other cr#p that was on the other chanels.

I entered Nat Cap. Now where's my DVD?
I think I'd rather pay the coin than enter Dakar just to get it. Compared to some motorsport fly-on-the-wall docos I've seen, this one was crap.

That's a deal worth going for!!! Hehehe....
Well the DVD arrived but I wrapped it before Ethan could get his hands on it. Hopefully it is an improvement on the ABC the other night.

So there seems to be one more episode to go. I hope Simon makes it, he seems like a real dude! I'm going to refrain from commenting on the whingeing that is splattered through the show ...
FYI:
Sunday SBS 11:00 am - DAKAR RALLY OFFICIAL FILM
Features all the highlights from last year's gruelling Paris to Dakar Classic.
Sunday SBS 6:00 pm - DAKAR 2007 DAY 1
Highlights from Day 1

My god did you see the disorganisation?
I mean the logistics must be insane for an event like that but
leaving someone in the desert without water for 24 hours? WTF were they thinking?

Daniel do you mean that the team didn't make him take a shyteload of water with thim, or that the medics took him on their truck, then punted him off apparently wihtout any water???
I thought Adrian might have had somehting to do with the event, what was that comment about 130 bikes starting the day and 80 going missing???

Of the bikes - 130 starters / 80 left in that one stage (as per the show). I don't think the organisers were ready for such carnage! You have to remember that Mat was VERY tired, emotional and hungry. I'm keen to see just how bad he really was treated. He may have another opinion when he gets some sleep. I wonder also if he gets his bike back?
