There's some things you can't put a dollar value on....
.... and my nomination this week is Ken Block's promotion of rally!!!
The guy has millions of subscribers to his blog, and HERE he explains in detail what recce is, the cars they use, and the preparation of those cars....
There's probably a fair chunk of general public rally fans that don't know what recce is, and now even the not-so-rally-fanatical blog subscribers know another intricate part of rallying!
Ken, if there was a smiley face icon for taking your hat off, I would've just posted it! To me that blog better promotes the sport than some million dollar V8 Supercar ad with Pink.... Keep up the good work!!!

I know there is a whole thread about KB joining the WRC, which I haven't read...
I saw him on the WRC shakedown and thought it might be a great way to bring the US out of the Motorsport Dark Ages... He does seem to be a good ambassador for the sport, good in front of the camera from what I think American fans would look for... but... (why is there always a but?)
He has no tarmac experience... He has only competed in one WRC even before, and only once... and he didn't seem real quick...
I can't see the team sticking with it if he is getting hosed by Matthew Wilson...
I can't see fans from "The Greatest Country on Earth" sticking with it if their brightest star is getting hosed by Matthew Wilson...
Just saying...
I hope I am wrong, I think bringing the US into the WRC, which is unpossible in most other forms of world motorsport (F1 will never overtake Indiecars, WTCC/Endurance Racing will never overtake NASCAR), would be a great thing for the sport... and Ken might be the person to start that...

You don't have to be that good to get the publicity; name one major tournament Anna Kournikova won, but everybody knew her name when she was playing..

He will get hammered. Even in US National stuff, he is/was a bit of a joke (crashes all the time, and isn't all that fast before crashing).
All of the "oh, its Ken Block! He's teh awesomest!" stuff you see is non competitive (at least, non-speed based).
Being fast isn't what he's built his reputation as a driver upon - although it has always been implied.
So I don't reckon he's on the team because anyone thinks he's going to be fast. But I'm sure it was a clever marketing decision, a probably one that cost the team $SFA .
I agree with Greg - his presence is great for raising the sport's profile.
And its highly likely that if "Ken Block the driving legend" is getting hosed, then plenty of people will suddenly become aware of just how damn good all of the top level WRC drivers are - which is also good for Rallying, even if it isn't good for Ken Block.
Whether his 'brand' can withstand a clear demonstration of his lack of speed, is another question.

Well Block seemed to be mixing it with Matthew Wilson in his first event which isn't a bad start. To be honest, all the interviews I have seen with him he has come across as pretty humble so more power to him! Go Block!

Yeah but Wilson is a dud. Imagine what some of our Aussie locals would be able to be with the exposure and resources Wilson has had thrown at him. It's a waste. I got excited in Sweden when I thought he might throw a punch at Petter... but he just sooked.
Block is cool, but he simply isn't good enough to be at the front now, and probably never will be. Same as Raikkonen. Good luck to them. They will both be beating Wilson by mid-season.
How good is Ogier though? Super-star... he might even be able to beat Ray Day in Tidbinbilla!

Good on block, he is living the dream. Started DC shoes sold DC shoes for a LOT of money and now spends money on his rally cars. He raised the profile of the sport in the US and he does something that a lot of eBMSC have forgotten how to do. He has FUN! He must be pretty slow since he won round 2 of the us champs last week! He isnt at wrc level but nowhere has he said he will be, he doesnt care he is just loving his life and good on him!
I say not only is Block good for wrc but we also need Pastrana who is and even bigger nut job ( but has big ones where they count, he jumped out of a plane without a parachute on ffs)
