Brian,

Thanks for that. Am away at present...

Will drop you a line at some point. I was hoping there were a few people machining at home with the smaller machines (ie not professionally).

That said expert advice is always welcome.

Greg

I was just starting out in model engineering when I found motorsport so may be able to help you with your questions.

Cheers,
Adam.

Brann and Brian,

Thanks for that. I am planning to set up a small workshop in my single car garage to make items for the rally car. Plan is to get a small bench lathe and mill (separate ones), a TIG and a number of other things..

I am lucky in the sense that I have a friend who will let me use space in his shed to build the car.

I am deliberately aiming at small bench equipment due to the room limitations and being able take my time making stuff (cutting rate limitations etc)

Brian: in the short term, are you happy to work from paper drawings? any limitations? costs?

Cheers

Greg

Personally I've not had much experience with the small bench stuff, but I've seen some stuff in the engineering field done on it tho. However it was small stuff tho.

I would recommend getting as big as you have space for and can afford. I bought a second hand EMCO lathe which is about the size of the entry level Hare and Forbes lathe which comes with a stand. I have some times wished it was bigger to turn bigger diameter items (but I think I can borrow a bigger lathe if I ever really need it)

Cheers,
Adam.

Greg,
I have a few projects on the go at the moment, roll cage in a VE commodore and a rebuild on a Chevy sports sedan engine so the only limitation right now is time but that want last. Depends what you need done obviously the more complex the longer it will take as its only a hobby but thumb nail sketches are no problem have worked from them alot. Cost will again depend on difficulty but we'll talk about that(won't be much a bit of beer money). Let me know what sort of thing you want done and I'll see when it can be done....Brian
