The V2 Rocket project has begun...
Hi all,
I've been a lurker for a while but have just started getting serious about getting my wife behind the wheel of our $100 93' festiva V2 Rocket (don't ask..).
With 0 kms Rally experience under either belt it's gonna be fun !
I'm keen to get us to a few local rallys as my wife's navi to see if we get the bug.
I'm hoping to drop a B6T 1.6L turbo (323 GTX/R laser TX3) motor in the little box if I can find one or a 1.8L Astina( or similar gearbox compatible engine) depending on availability, CAMs ruling and levels of effort.
I haven't even started contimplating suspension yet but very low budget is the theme.
Anyone out there rallyed one of these shoeboxes before ?
The power to weight should be very good, handling <pass> but with a good cage and safety gear we'll feel a bit happier to give it some.
Cheers and hope to learn lots and meet plenty of helpful people !
The Goats (Gordo & Carley)

Have you guys checked out your local motorkhana / khanacrosses? It's a good, less expensive and stressful way to test the water.
As a matter of interest, where are you located?

Thanks for the hints guys. I'll *definately* be planning a modification route before spending anything.
Linda - I didn't even think about having a go at motorkhana / khanacross (I think that's what Rod out at Lochleigh has thrashed his buggy in a bit from memory?).
I haven't searched yet but is there any info up on BMSC or is it somewhere else ? Will get googling now...
We're located in Kambah.
Would be great for us to try out some rally based motorsport before going in boots and all. I've been in the 4wd scene for 11 years but "they're too slow!"
Cheers,
Gordo

Do I have a deal for you!
We're running a khanacross tomorrow at Cottage Five (close to Cotter), and we may be able to squeeze you guys in for some runs, but I'll need to know quickly, as we've had a full field for over 2 weeks, but have had a couple of people pull out at the last minute. We always love to see new people come and try the khanas.
Below is a link to the current thread for tomorrow.

I also recommend to get a good insight to the sport that you official at a couple of events.
We have Bay Stages coming up on 6 September, and closer to home, Starmart, 27 September.
This exposure will also give you more understanding of rally, and hopefully give you one on one exposure to competitors, officials and organisers.
By the way, welcome to the rally community

The only exposure so far (apart from spectating) was when I was on recovery in the Jeep for a few years for ROC which was fun (go mineshaft!) but neither of us have marshalled or similar so will take it on-board.
cheers for the welcome

Khana cars don't need too much lurve; we have a number of khana specials that come out.
Important things to note are; fire extinguisher (can usually be bought from either Bunnings or Supacheap for $20-$30), resembles a car, ie not cut off.
If you can get it there on a trailer, you don't need rego.....
If you can't have a run, come and have a look anyway; meet the people, give us a hand as officials (low pressure again).

Showing my extreme n00biness here..
so the CAMS license link (level 2) covers all insurance for vehicle and event competitors ?
In 4wd land I normally need street rego, min 3rd party property and CCDA membership (for some comps). this is good news !
I guess registered vehciles make life easier though to get around to stages/events..
When I get some time I will endeavour to actually read some docco to keep the barrage of questions to a minimum too...

Nothing wrong with being a noob, and ask questions, as there are a lot of people on here willing to help.
I don't totally understand the insurance side, however, it's my understanding that CAMS insurance can cover injury during an event.
Yes, registered vehicles does make it easier to transport the car; depending on the event.
We don't need road rego as we use closed roads for our events.
FWIW; the first few khanas we competed in, we were in our Excel road car. It's good experience, even if you don't further your competitive licence, it does help improve your diving skills and confidence.
If you are interested in competing more competitively, you'll need to have OLT (Observed Learner Test), which can only be done at events.
While I think of it, there's also a motorkhana being run by MGCC on Sunday at Sutton Road Driver Training Centre. We're hoping to take our son to the motorkhana, as he's not quite old enough to compete in khanas.
I have further details about the motorkhana if you're interested, but I do highly recommend that you come out to either or both events to get good exposure.

CAMS licencing and entry/permit fees cover some insurance, obviously doesn't cover damage to the cars .

Khanacross/motorkhana are run in paddocks or on places that aren't roads that you need rego. for. You'll need some sort of CAMS affiliated car club membership (BMSC offer online membership and LCCC are the club running the khanacross).

For rallies you're supposed to have registration as the car needs to be driven between stages (which are closed roads) on public roads obeying normal road rules. Some people in recent times have been using unregistered vehicle permits in place of registration to allow them to compete where the vehicle needs to be driven on public roads, but as mentioned above this isn't an issue for khanacross or motorkhana action.

ta for the info guys.
found this in the khana docco too :
28. Personal Accident Insurance is provided by the purchase of a CAMS Level 2NS Licence or superior (2NS is the minimum requirement) as specified in Appendix I of the 2008 CAMS Manual.
We'll be going the registered route for now as trailering doesn't fit the budget just yet.
Soon as the V2 is ready to roll we'll join the LCCC and get to a khana to see what it's all about
oh and some funnies : a pic during testing in the "rally de kambah" and an artist m8's impression of the 'rocktiva'
