These and the later 33 models which include awd are mostly overlooked in Australia, few realise for instance the original 1200 Alfasud came standard with a close ratio gearbox and these engines like all Alfa's are built with competition in mind with all the good stuff standard, quality pistons cranks valve gear rods etc.
Most people would find that a season driving one of these would result in a noticeable improvement in corner speeds and technique from driving a car which works with the driver rather than against them.
Unlike a Hyundai they were built to a higher standard by a country that is Motorsport mad and the breeding shows.

Come on Brooke, the banks have heaps of money they'll be happy to hand over to you. Imagine how quick you could get between photo locations!!

Haha. That's a point. Though my proposition to the bank for a loan probably wouldn't pass.
"dear bank SA, may I loan $3000 for the purchase of an amazing rally car, which shows promise of bringing in the invested amount of $3000 when I win the arc in it,
PS, will get to work quicker as well"
could work?

I have zero experience with 33/Suds, but I did own an Alfetta sedan for a while...
I really reckon that 95% of the horror stories with all older European cars are from a mix of gronk mechanics back in the day, and the 'specialist' mechanics nowdays.
Imagine its 1976 and you're a mechanic that's used to working on Holdens/Falcons/Valiants, and you consider a VW Beetle to be fairly unusual... How are you going to cope when someone turns up in an Alfa with all of this weird, different engineering in it?
Are you going to say "Yeah, they're well designed and well built, but f$%k me, I've got no idea where to start!"
Or are you going to whinge and bitch about how crap they are, in an attempt to hide your ignorance/inability?
Now imagine that you're an Alfa specialist in 2010. Are you going to tell your customers "Nah mate, they've got a few quirks, but overall they're a pinch of piddle to work on - the gronk down at the local servo could easily do this job for half the price!"?
Two of the Sud/33s main faults (electrics and interiors that fall apart) should have been eliminated in the process of maknig this into a rally car.
Funnily enough, the third of the likely faults (rust) is unlikely to be more of an issue in an old Alfa compared to an old 'anything else' - if its not rooted by now, its probably been looked after fairly well.

Howdy all, thanks for the comments, as for the reliablity issues, out of the 3 and only rallies we competed in last year, we didnt finish one of them fully. But that wasnt cause of the car but from our inexperience. The first rally, i had put on a pair of redline air filters, which didnt fit quite right, sucked in dirt and the engine leaned itself out and died after the 3rd stage at Roberstown. The second rally at Wirabarra, we didnt have a tank gaurd and you can gues what happened. for the last one we set some fantastic stage times and were 2nd 2wd until the fuel filter blocked up cos we didnt clean out the replacment tank.
So from apart from those mistakes, the car was great!
We are racing it again this year and it is getting a fuel cell in the boot, the gearbox is being replaced with a fully rebuilt shorter ratio box complete with an LSD and new and higher front suspention along with a few small things to make it even better.
As for rust, we resprayed the car last year, and attemped to fix some of the small rust patches. Small bits have started to come out again, but none of it is structual, just small bits behind the wheel arches and nothing higher than that.
The car will be up for sale again at the end of the season, and providing we dont end up in a tree, with the uprades I will want $5000 without the seats.
Thanks Guy

Yeah Ive seen this car at a few of the rallys around SA. This thing has beaten Evo's and Rexs on a few stages and won a Khanax outright. This is a seriously quick little car, I'd buy it myself if it wer'nt for all the other toys that I have'nt time for now. $3000 bargain!

I should have read the last post before saying that $3000 was a bargain. Even $5000 is an awesome price for a sorted rally car with this pedegree.

More than a few stages. I reckon a push bike would have beaten us at Wirrabara.
Come on Brooke, buy it before it gets more expensive!!

Yeah Guy, better fess up. Lewis is worried about his 2010 competition......
Pop up some more photos too. It's a good looking car and deserves more than two front end shots. Can't believe it hasn't sold yet.
