Help! 4G32 timing
We've got our Colt Lancer 1600 ready to compete Saturday at the Sandhills Sandblast in South Carolina, with the exception of timing. The engine seems down on power and fiddling with the timing does not seem to help. We don't know whether we are off a cog on the chain, or if it is other issues.
This engine has the GSR cylinder head and cam, and is running sidedrafts.
Can folks let us know what they are running for timing in their Lancers?
Thanks,
Wilson

My rally car runs about 32 degrees (I think) at high revs, which with my distributor works out to be 10-12 degrees before top dead centre at idle.
Anywhere from 10 to 15 at idle should be OK I think?
Compression test it, check for blocked stuff in the carbies? Do the valve clearances again in case one or two have wound open/shut?

Mind you hopefully someone will be along with some more information on tuning before the weekend, although I put the engine together and drive the thing I don't know that much about tuning, I let Autotech do all that stuff for me.
Cheers,
Tony.

When I had my 4G32 on the dyno shifting the ignition timing by up to 10 degrees didn't make much difference to how the engine ran nor how much power it produced. The dyno guy said that was typical of these engines.

I run 10 - 12 degrees on my lancer which has the 1726 motor, twin 45 webers and a factory No.5 cam. I found adjusting the timing either way didnt make much difference to power output, but it wouldnt rev freely or idle properly.

We got the timing worked out last night (the chain was off a cog), and the motor running as it should. A little carb tuning and we will be good to go. Thanks for all your replies!

Got Her Done!
Thanks for everybody's replies.
Had a good maiden event. Car ran well, but broke the diff with one and a half stages left. Still had one wheel drive, so completed the event, and even beat a few cars in the process.

That's Greek to me. It's a 1977 Dodge Colt, which I believe was the LB Lancer to you all.
Here's a couple of more pics. Please note the Georgia Antique Vehicle License Plate. The letters HA2GKD stand for "Happy As 2 Guys Kicking Dirt".

Different trims and bits for different countries. LB equivalent.
Interesting use of boards, you appear to be stopped at the yellow flying finish board which technically should be in the stage .
The start boards are just a plain (yellow looking) flag. Not that it's your problem, maybe the club that ran the event don't have all the correct boards.
Looks like you had fun.

That was the shakedown stage prior to the event and they did not have the proper boards. We try to do it right and use FIA signage and FIA modified timing (where you add the stage bogey time and the transit time to get to the next Arrival Time Control to discourage speeding on the transits) (I'm also an event organizer and counsel for the sanctioning body).
Also note that in the second pic, the co-driver (who is actually a very accomplished driver who had to sell his AE86 Corolla) is driving the vehicle. He is a natural and his form is better than the driver who ran the event.
As to clubs, we do not have a lot of local organizations, but rather depend on three sanctioning bodies who have co-opted the actual event organizers (NASA Rally Sport (our body), Rally America (our competitors) and Rally New York Ltd. (a rogue body that puts on a couple of stage events a year)).
NASA was a rogue organization initially (they competed as upstarts against the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) (who was the FIA body with sporting authority in the US for Rally) starting in 2003). SCCA folded their stage rally program in 2004 due to insurance concerns and sold their rights to Rally America. Now NASA is the only organizing body that puts on FIA rally events in the US.
Regardless of sanctioning body, every event in the US is really a clubman event, despite illusions of grandeur. The strength of NASA is that they recognize that the clubman competitor is the key to keeping the sport going. Our competitors do not.
If you want to run a US event, I would recommend the Laughlin International Rally, and further, if you ship or rent, can guarantee a waiver of the entry fee. This is a great 3 day event than actually runs through the Grand Canyon.
