Media Storage

Di##ing around on ebay and came accross this, we use this product straight from a bullet camera and back of terraphone. 20GB hard drive means that you can store the entire event, upload and edit it on PC. Good quality picture (also depends on bullet camera), small and very lightweight (fits in centre console or glovebox). First time we have seen them on ebay for a while.

Note: make sure you get a copy of the buyers receipt, as it is hard to claim warranty without it. Apparently they are only supposed to be supplied by ALDI, although we found it is very difficult to walk into the shop and buy one as they don't tell you if or when they will have them. Only drama we have had was a small program glitch in ours but they replaced it immediately.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Portable-Medi...QQcmdZViewItem

It is cheaper and smaller than a video camera/recorder has less parts to break.

Looks good for home use, notsomuch for the car - HD not going to like the jiggle, and it records in pretty low res to watch on the TV later - there are recording modes:
Standard 240x180
Fine 272x204
Better 288x216
Best 320x240

For more info, its a rebadged MSI megaview 588

How so, we use it in the car and at home, we use it set to the highest res setting (about 1 hour less recording time). We have not worried about getting a DVD recorder as we record straight from TV to the media player, the quality is not perfect but it is more than ample to sit and watch a movie or show at a later date (at the moment I have 4 episodes of 'Lost' on it.

In the car the media player sits in the centre console in its material pouch and has been banged around quite a bit, no probs as yet.have taped 6 events on it so it has more than payed for itself.

This is a sample from stage 2 Natcap 06 after going through windows movie maker with no adjustments to sound or picture quality. The only thing I did was reduce the size from 14 to 2meg.

Movie.wmv

Even at this reduction in quality, it is still far better than some incar I have seen off video camers .

The colored lines at the bottom are from the dumbass American Pal Bulluet camera!

Disclaimer: I don't profess to "know all" I have come up with this from trial and error and found it to be the best value for money idea without losing quality and gaining weight in the car, cheers all!

if "Best" is 320x240 (the same resolution as my iPod.) then it will be perfect for the web (as your sample demonstrates) but it is nowhere near DV or even DVD quality/resolution and the better/bigger your tv screen the more disapointing the result will look. But if it floats your boat then go for it!

Check out www.4kamaustralia.com for another type of camera setup. If your Camcorder has AV in then you can plug these camera's straight into it and get DVD quality or plug them into the digital recorder and get 320x240

Very light weight and you can use them in many different sports. Have sold a few to snow boarders and windsurfers.

mroberts got a bit of a rap
I ran an old digital-8 video camera with an external input with a cheap perv-cam for my in-car.

I was able to pick up the camera pretty cheap - look for ones with busted LCDs or lenses. The limiting factor is the remote camera, and I think I only paid about $10 for mine, otherwise it's full TV quality.

I wonder if tape or HDD is better for high vibration. I guess solid state would be ideal, but potentially more expensive.

Ray, you have to have cornered the market in cr*p websites. So little detail, so much visual pain and pdfs with no purpose.

What res is this camera you're flogging?

rallygraphix has some part of a clue
Rallygraphix is now offering Digital in car camera & video recording systems designed for extreme & motor sport situations.

We have been testing these units over the past year in the following teams vehicles: DNA rallysport (Declan Dwyer), O2 Rallysport (Simon Orme), S and J motorsport (Sean & Jo Day) covering rally, hill climb and tarmac race situations and are 100% happy with the results.

We have now set up a local dealership in SA to be able to supply the
motorsport community in SA and Australia.
Supply and support is based here in metro Adelaide.

We have two units available:

VIO-POV.1 Cam.

This has been rated by most extreme sports sites as the most bullet proof
and robust recording unit available on the market to date!

Ballistic case, waterproof, shock resistant and dustproof!

This unit has the highest frame and resolution available out of all units
currently available. A huge 720 x 480 resolution with up to 30 frames per
second. (Normal video is 25 fps).

The camera head is a high resolution unit as standard offering down to .5
lux sensitivity and a 74° field of view. On board audio is included, with a
cable mounted high gain microphone. An aux microphone can be added.

The unit uses rechargeable or standard AA batteries offering up to 10+ hours
of usage. Specialist rechargeable batteries have not been used as they are
hard to replace/charge in a remote situation. AA’s are available cheaply and
easily anywhere!

A 2 button remote control, for either wrist/roll cage or dashboard mounting,
makes it easy to start and stop the recording without having to access the
main unit. This is a great feature in a rally situation.

Unit stores the MPEG4 video onto a standard SD card, 2 gigabyte allows
between 2 hours and 16 hours recording. (Highest and lowest settings).

4:3 or wide screen format is also standard on the unit. Footage recorded is
classed as DVD quality and is editable in windows movie maker or with the
software that comes with the unit.

All footage can be played in standard windows media player, and the included
software CD has the required DIVX codec’s if your PC does not have them.

Full information is available by emailing me, or you can view full
specifications and images at: http://www.vio-pov.com/index.php Click on
the POV.1 link.

The POV.1 comes complete with batteries, 1Gb SD card and mounts and is ready
to go straight out of the box. Pricing of this unit is under $1000.00 inc
GST.

POV.1 Sample video available here:
301 Moved Permanently
These video’s have reduced frame rate and resolution due to being posted on
you tube.

Elmo SUV Cam (V1 / V-II / V-III)

A compact unit with a 2.5 inch screen and Hi-resolution camera. This is
another option for in-car video, and has performed well in the motorsport
situations.

This is a smaller unit, with a slightly lower resolution and frame rate.
There is 3 different models available all with different features.

Full information and a model comparison is available here:
www.elmo.co.jp/suv-cam/en/index.html

Sample video available of the (V1)Elmo at:
301 Moved Permanently &
301 Moved Permanently
These video’s have reduced frame rate and resolution due to being posted on
you tube.

“Nuke” proof housings are also available for the cameras to allow mounting
of the camera on the outside of the car, and still offer full protection. A
full range of accessories is available, from mounts to various bracketry,
longer camera cables and SD cards.

You can contact us for further information at:
samples@rallygraphix.com.au or on 0418 822 337.
