Ignition and Start Wiring
I think it's time to turn the Lancer into a real race car. The starter motor is sticking on and it's probably due to the 30 year old ignition barrel packing it in?
If I want to bypass the barrel do I just need an on/off toggle for ignition and a momentary switch for the starter?
Is it as easy as it sounds?
Accessories aren't used for anything as far as I can tall, so I just need ignition on/off.
Simple?

Yes should be put in an ignition on/off, and a push button for the starter or just put in a push button for the starter and still use the keys for ignition

Go the whole hog and get rid of the ignition barrell completely.
Does your fan run off battery, ignition or accessories? (or is yours mechanical???)
How much draw do you have through the ignition circuit and starter circuit? If it's more than about 10-15 amps on each, run them through relays.
If you're going to put an ignition switch and start button/switch in, you should remove the barrell. This will stop you from driving straight into something the first (and only) time you forget to put the key in.
Just a tip from my friendly auto elec, not from experience.
Oh, and spend the money on decent switches/relays. You don't want it failing mid-stage.

Getting rid of the ignition barrel also gets rid of a nasty sharp thing near your knee in case you hit something (not that you ever hit anything Tony )

Use relays (like you would for driving lamps) to take the load off the switches.
Then you can use any cheap switches you like without having to worry about failure. H/duty switches will be bigger - harder to mount - than "normal" ones.
cheers

The last thing I want to do is cover them, particularly the starter if I stall in stage. That will be the biggest thing to get used to I reckon, not going for the key.

It's all about the pushing. Besides, you get more revs than me, and the Lancer doesn't do 640km/h.

If your starter motor uses a solinoid to make the electrical contact for the high current required, it may just be the soliniod sticking, not your Ig. switch.

Its good to have the cranking switch seperate frm the ignition one, so that you can crank for compression tests or such without the coil sparkage.
