Efi computer for Ignition an another for Fuel???
Hi guys.
Im running a E6 Haltec ECU on the RX2, Which Doesn't have the best Direct fire reliability ( Actually the resolution is pretty poor, ) So I stopped using that part (Because carbon Apex seals are not cheap.....)
I have surplus a Microtech Digi 1 , (Which have no problems with this idea of Direct fire coils...) An I do not want to Wire in another ECU because the Haltec does the fuel bit fine.
So I was thinking ( Yes , It hurt ) Of Running the Digi for the Ignition only, And splitting the TDC Trigger feed to work the Haltec as well.
It seems a bit easy, So any thoughts?

I haven't had too much experience with the Digi 1, but is it that much better at ignition control than the E6?
Provided the ecu's don't interfere with each other it should work fine, but will it be worth the hassles? Upgrading to an E6S-X probably isn't that expensive a proposistion and may give better results.

Do you really want two ECUs to debug? Let alone having two laptops to tune it.
It's certainly possible, but it scares me...

Just a suggestion..
You could sell the Digi 1 for $100
Sell the old Haltech for $300
Buy a megasquirt for $300 full assembled with loom
And have an ECU with better features across the board...If you check ausrotary.com there is currently a thread on the MS and installation on rotors..
With the "fragility" of rotors when it comes to tuning, I personally wouldnt take too many risks..the chance of one ECU leaning fuel out, whilst the other advances timing would have me extremely concerned...And having used a DIGI 1 on a rotor before and killing engines at an extremely quick rate I personally would use it as a frisbie
I am looking at using a MS on my old Bimmer when the engine is "updated" due to an extreme lack of wanting to spend money on a car I will probably pilot into a tree...

Is the Haltech poor, or is it the trigger, or the way the haltech sees the trigger? I think the predictive on both systems is fairly poor in any case.

The haltec uses a 4 pronged sensor ( Modded factory crank angle sensor) Whilst the Microtec uses the 16 prong. I am getting pickup noise from the Ignition coils which is causing some Hi RPM richness (Phantom fuel pulse triggers due to coil feedback), So I want to fit a Crank angle sensor to overcome this. It just means I would use the Factory 13BTurbo sensor not a Front pulley sensor! (A bit easier to fit...)
The Haltec is working fine otherwise, So sticking a Mega squirt in for the Ignition Is anothe Idea. (I want to just set and forget the Microtec,) When it worked, the Coil pack ignition was definetly better.
I was also thinking of fitting to the Factory crank angle sensor a trigger just for the Haltec ( I have the bits) so it would be running stand alone.
I could fit another computer, But I would rather play with the thing than work on it!

There's no real reason why the Haltech + Digi1 set-up wouldn't work, but it sounds like considerably more effort than putting in a decent late model ECU. And less reliable too.
Digi 1s are at least... what... ten years old!? Or is it 15 years now? Microtech don't support them at all, anymore.
~$1200 for a new LTX10S (or what-ever the current one is) would be so much less effort, and would give you a better, more reliable, simpler set-up.

I have just got ignition working on a Peugeot 205 GTi with Megasquirt.
I am using the original 60-2 toothed wheel on the flywheel to trigger this and it is working fine.
The guy who dynoed it was impressed, much better than the Wolf apparently.
The Megasquirt Kit is AU $320 landed but you have to assemble the components on the PCB.
Another way to go would be to get a programmable ignition kit from Jaycar Electronics.
This was featured in Silicon Chip Magazine earlier this year and all up cost is about $160 inluding the programmer, no lap top required.
It has provision for knock sensing etc. so a big step up from their earlier unit.
