Seat Install Issues

Well I went and bought a cheap seat on ebay for the '86 civic khana machine.

Problems....

The seat has heaps of lateral flex in its base - when placed on the floor and sat in, the support between the seat and the mount can flex a couple of inches side to side. Thinking of sending it back. Good idea? Teach me for going cheap

Secondly, the old civic seat has rail mounts about 46cm wide. This seat, and most modern cars (my jeep at least) has rail mounts about 36.5cm wide. Anyone know what, if any adaptors are out there so I can bolt the seat to the existing floor rails or is this a case of get a new floor mounting system/adapter?

cheers.

is it a side mount or bottom mount seat if its a side mount get some 8mm aluminium angle 100x50 or whatever you need and drill it to suit

Most fibreglass seats will flex like that. They are/should be strong enough, but they gain their stiffness from their mountings.

Plus what Ric said: Seats with side mounts are easy to mount, using some thick walled aluminium angle (or steel if you're prepared to put up with the weight penalty).
Remember that a race seat typically has much less padding, so you can usually mount it on the original adjustable seat runners and still physically fit into the car...

To stop the Cobra evolution flexing I use a Square frame made of box section. ( Ive still got seat runners, Its a rego thing....)

Its not just the cheap ones that flex!

Thanks all. I get what you mean but I think i'll wait till I can get someone to have a look and suggest a tailored fix. Will do that at the next Tues BMSC mtg

The seat appears to be bottom mount. So I'm gueesing I may have to make a bracket that mounts to the original runners, so that the seat can then mount onto the top of the bracket.

Maybe . At least my mechanical know-how is being improved....i'm guessing this is the first of many frustrations to come!

If it's a bottom-mount seat, then the difference in rail widths (car vs seat) is a blessing, not a curse.
Usually some 50x6mm steel strap, run across the rails will see you clear.
