I have just built mine using Bens V - Mate idea works great except for the sound quality from the cheap Ebay $40.00 camera, new one is on its way with separate mic
I have built mine using a Jaycar 12v - 4.5v converter but also used a 5w, 12 volt 100 ohm resistor
this alows the power to be interupted with out causing the recording to stop and also works as an in car charge for the batteries
cheers
Steve

Recording setup to PC/TV which is the highest quality, and will save the file as MP4 and can be vied by Apple Quicktime on your PC if you need a player.
As we found out with Robs, some dont automatically come set as that, my one did but others havnt ???
Some more Tips learnt from the last couple of weeks.
If your intercom doesnt have an audio out, you will need to buy an external mic if the camera you buy doesnt have one, and has to be a powered one.
this bloke is making them and look to be the way to go
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Microphone-fo...QQcmdZViewItem
thanks Dave for finding it.
Ben.

A slightly different take but perhaps an option:
http://www.oregonscientific.co.uk/pr...era_Bundle.htm
To be honest it can't be that good if its that cheap but based on the specs theres no reason it shouldn't be a decent entry level option...

Hi,
Just a quick note to advise that the v-mate i bought was faulty, wouldnt stop recording and a few other issues. I reported it faulty and both mobileciti and sandisk were great and i had a replacement in 7 working days, fingers crossed with this one.

Yeah or just a few frames at full res to get an idea of the quality level. Maybe it's just me but I can't find any original source material from this setup on the web (youtube doesn't help much )

Sorry its on its way, I didnt get a chance to run it at Myall in the Sprinter, and we used the crap camera at RMV in the Excel. But we will be using the Full setup at the Bay.
I will post some High Res from the Excel practice day a couple of weeks ago.
Ben.

Ok, some footage is now up on my website,
and i have finally figured out how to make it link properly,
They are under the download section, just right click on the link
and select save target as, then open the file once saved to your PC.
Rally stage is about 40 meg, and is with the low res cheap camera,
High res camera, is a couple of seconds from the Excel rally day in full res with the new camera, just before Mathew covered it in mud.
Ben.

So hows the system been going for you Ben?
I'm planning on making one using this instead of the V-Mate.
The only thing I'm dubious of is that it does not seem to have two seperate inputs, i.e. I wouldn't be able to record footage and car noise with a camera/mic combo and intercom sounds directly from the Peltor (which has a dedicated audio out).
However upon looking at the V-Mate ( here) it does not seem to have a seperate audio input either, so how did you achieve it, a two into 1 adapter or something?
Also how can you adjust the volume balance between the two seperate audio channels?
Finally what option did you go with for powering the unit and camera?
I'm thinking battery is the safe option so it doesn't go mental when you turn the car off or stall in stage etc. Only problem is I hate having to remember batteries and so forth. Did you develop some sort of capacitor system that allows you to keep recording if you stall or something?

G'day Ben
Very nice work on the video system, planning on using your concept, where do I send the royalty fee???
Saw the Sandisk brochure ( http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/p...tebrochure.pdf), they quote 7.3 hours of recording time for High Quality recording and a 4GB Memory Card. What sort of recording times are you getting?
How did you go about mounting the Sony video camera (tek screws into the door skin? ) Any thoughts of mounting it in-car?
Regards
Dirk
