stock A12; where to now?

hey there,

so I have a stock 120Y that I'm gonna get ready for a little racin. Was wondering the best way to go for a few "on the cheap" mods to get some zip into the ol girl. I've only driven it once, to get t back to mine but it was so slow to get going. I just want a bit more so I can enjoy myself on the dirt.

I'm thinking exhaust and carby but I really don't know what to choose or where to go.. Further confusing me is the pile of 180b bits I have lying around. I already have a set of 2'' extractors and a pair of su's (for an L1 so I wonder if I should just get a manifold for su's to fit the 120 or is there a better option for an A12 than su's? ( or will they even fit!!??)

also exhaust is pretty much same question. Is 2" too much/not enough for the engine.

any help at all would be appreciated. I'm on a real tight budget so I really want to work out what I need before trying a dozen combinations and waste valuable race time and $$$$.

cheers, jon

A DGV Weber from an Escort/Cortina is a cheap and worthwhile upgrade. Jap SUs are pus - they work OK, if you put in the ridiculous amount of time and effort required to set them up.

A 2" exhaust will be overkill for an otherwise stock 1200, but is about right if you end up building a good engine.

Little engines benefit from replacing mechanically driven radiator fans with electrical fan. Ditto mechanically driven fuel pumps.

Beyond that, its into the engine for bigger cam, more compression, etc etc. Or fit an A14 (preferably with bigger cam, more compression, etc).

Way back when, we used to run a stock 120Y - had rally tyres, a harness and a sports steering wheel and not much else done to it. It never finished worse than 3rd outright at SKDAC khanacrosses (with Petey at the helm), and even I could usually finish in the top 10.

food for thought

thanks for that spac, just what the doc ordered. I def have much to learn ,maybe tyres r better option for successful driving, but hey if you cant win, get sideways!

Your point is a good one though and I look forward to attending the John Watson Tri series Khana either in the ninja fato or my deadly stock 18R corona to give you all a run 4 ya money
thanks for your time man I really appreciate the knowledge on offer here!!

Cheers,
Jon

You don't want to end up TOO sideways, as I recently discovered

hi
i got a lightened 1500 cam that will work in your motor, also have 2 flywheels - one is lightend to about 3.7kg and the other about 7.5 but its custom made with the weight closer to the centre. also you can add 4mm spacers to the bottom of the valvetrain posts to get more valve lift - i have a few of those if you want pics to see what i mean.

Was a really nice car

Can list the bits I put into when I get some time

Also I have a complete CA18 RWD non turbo inc wiring & ECU and 5sp which I could sell at a reasonable price
