Why would you do this?

see pic

Why would someone run fuel pumps like this or am i just missing something.

The only reason i can think of is if one failed you would still have a pump pumping.

In series is a bit odd. I run two in parallel on a change-over relay.

The only thing I can think of that makes any sense is that one is capable of lifting the fuel out of the tank and the other isn't. No matter what, unless they're matched for flow and pressure, you're not going to get very good results.

That's how mine is set up (came that way when I bought it). I had a little square one sucking through a Carter gold. They're switched to run separately - one as a spare. The little square one couldn't suck enough fuel through the Carter to fuel the Weber, whereas the Carter blows through the little one adequately.

I've replaced the little one with anothe Carter Gold (yet another ebay bargain I've picked up) and will see if it makes any difference.

If it still doesn't work, I'll plumb then in parallel as Andrew has suggested. This is the only way to do it IMHO. Just need a pair of Tee pieces. The pumps should act as a check valve, so there shouldn't be any backflow issues.

The switch I am using is rated at 30A, so I don't bother with relays. Just another thing to go wrong (I've had more relays fail than switches).

Carter's are rotary vane pumps so put them in parallel. They wont like being drawn through.

Carter love

The pump on the right in the picture is a rotary vane type and will work as a suction pump. The pump on the left is a pressure only pump and doesn't like being mounted above the fuel source. I'd suggest this is why they are fitted as such, however I run just the rotary style without any dramas.
