Ignition Switch
The stock (30 year old) ignition switch in the Golf is shagged. It still switches ok, but occasionally jambs when inserting the key. Are there any issues with removing the thing altogether and using a switch and push-button????

ohh.. you could slightly over engineer the car and put in a finger print reader to ensure the 'owner' can start it... but that would be over kill for the very little effort put into the car thus far...

Just make sure you put it in easy reach for if you happen to stall in stage.

And make sure it's not possible to push the starter button through the dash! It's a bit hard to get to there!

Also you would need a Valet mode for the Nav to drive it to the car wash between stages.
Now a retina scanner... that would work!

Cruel but possibly true. But hopefully he's been in the Lancer enough times to know how to treat an underbody with the proper disrespect.

I can see it now.. off the start line, no revs... no wheel spin... they tyres will not only last him a season, they will last a lifetime

Yeah, happened to me at Oberon this year (and still needs to be fixed)! Luckily, it only popped into the dash a bit and I was still able to shove my finger through the hole in the dash and push the button. It certainly scared the hell out of me for a second and I thought I was in for one of the most embarrasing DNF's ever!
What would be more embarrasing? DNFing because the car won't start again because it has no fuel or because you can't get to the starter button?

What about one in the middle like this
I have an Isolator, and remote start button.
Makes it real easy set up all of the switches leave the key on, and use the remote isolator and button for starting.
Here like this......
